View Full Version : my recent problems, a solution?
right ive been having a play with the multi meter and i got some resistance readings. but i also discovered that a wire going to the ignitor multi plug from the actual loom has at somepoint been cut and just twisted together. well theres 2 actually but one is further back in the loom and goes off to the air con fan. But this one is black with an orange stripe. now from what i can gather from the wiring diagram this wire is either an earth or goes to the check connector? is this correct? if so which one is it lol?
Its the first time ive noticed this one like :)
also here are the readings i took:-
loom from ecu to ignitor:-
IGT 00.2 ohms
IGF 00.2 ohms
ecu to distributor:-
G1 00.4 ohms
NE 00.4 ohms
G- 00.2 ohms
G2 00.2 ohms
distributor pick up coil
G1 to -G 153.4 ohms
G2 to -G 153.3 ohms
NE to -G 153.3 ohms
now the last one it says in the book it should be between 180 and 220 ohms but would that make a huge difference?
When i come to connect these wires that ive found to have been cut. should i solder them or will a crimp on connector be alright?
I wonder why someone has done this to the loom. The wire has been cut and just twisted together and taped up. Perhaps something of a shady nature has been going on
Last week you couldnt work a multi meter, now your going beserk with it. :)
Supra dupra might be a good one for this one.

Those cable resistances are all fine . . .
The other ones you mention measuring across the distributor coils I'm sure are fine, especially as they're all the same
It's very suspicious that the very wire that could cause your problems has been cut . . . .
For all that they should be properly cleaned and soldered together, then properly insulated (preferably using self-amalgamating tape), I wouldn't have thought this was actually causing your problem . . . . . more an indication that someone previously has had the same problem and been investigating . . . . . very weird
Remind me - did you get another ECU and replace yours?

Those cable resistances are all fine . . . :agreed: They are pretty good, without renewing all connectors and wires you prob wont get any better than that!
What colour is this wire you found is it brown? in which case its a switched +12volt. The ignitors are a common +12 volt and pulsed ground.

to me the wire looks to be black with an orange stripe. but then there all dirty. ill try to get a pic tomorrow.
the twisted together wire looks as if it could be loosening off, i thought the black tape was part of the loom tape but i gave it a tug so i could see the wires and found it to be a piece of insulating tape.
these arfe the diagrams for reference:-

thats the ecu on the first one and the ignitor etc on the second one.

yes mate i replaced the ecu, ignitor a few times now lol and ive tried 3 different coils. Fingers crossed ive done as you did with the capri and found it accidentaly

lol yeah well they looked complicated to me but now i got into it they seem fairly straight forward :)

Well let's hope that dodgy wire is the problem !
I guess you just need to drive it around to make sure it doesn't break down again.
Good Luck !
right ive fitted some crimp conectors onto the dodgy joints. I also discovered that this wire which had been cut had a bit added to it and it looks like this wire goes to the toyota fitted alarm. wonder if it was them that fitted the wiring as bad as that. Or perhaps it could be an issue with the alarm itself. tho it is turned off

I did wonder if the reason the wire was cut was because it went through the Alarm . . . but figured you'd have mentioned that!!
Alarm/Immobilisers have a relay in them, used to interupt the wiring to such things as the Starter Motor and Ignition system. Paul I would say the relay in your Alarm is almost certainly the cause of your all your problems!!
Relays start getting dirt on their contacts after a few years, and need cleaning properly (with a piece of card soaked in switch cleaner)
Either that or fit a new relay in the Alarm (or replace the whole Alarm!)
By the way, crimp connectors are probably no better than twisting the wires together! Plus they can come apart . . you'd really be much better soldering them together properly then tape & forget forever.

well ive tried cutting the wire and joining the 2 ends so as to cut out the alarm (if that is where these wires do actually go) and the car started fine so i guess i can only try it out now.
I didnt solder it because theres a lot of wires close together and i cant really get them apart so i was scared incase i melted any insulation. i think ill just put a few connectors in the glove box just incase though
oh and where i said above that the wire went off to the aircon fan, it looks like it does but on closer inspection it goes past it lol ahh well
well its running now and i took it for a lil drive and so far it seems ok.
basically when i saw that a wire had been spliced and it then went off round the engine bay and came back into the same wire, i thought ahh this must be it and it looks as if it goes to the alarm so i just did away with the wire and reconected the 2 wires as they should have been. so i will need to look into a new alarm now. but that can wait as its mot time in 2 weeks
