Is it me, or turbo models seem to be more ticky/tapperty than normal non turbo models??
Remembr trying out 3 or 4 turbos and thinking to myself that my other 2 N/A's were quieter?? ( and several other N/A's i had tested )
They just seem to be slightly more noiser which you do not expect for a 24 valve engine.
Are there ways to get them quieter??
Samantha
Could just be injector tick, not normally a common thing, probably just bad examples that have been ragged and the N/A's looked after.

Check valve shimming as described in the trsm .. its not as hard as it seems and seems to be the most overlooked service item .. well tbh completly ignored on a supra.. people are too used to hydrolic tappets .. they need checking at EVERY major service and the shame is that most haven't been checked in 80 odd thousand miles :umm:
youll be amazed at the power gains and the quietness of a well shimmed topend

Hi,
Thought so and i remember now reading about this.
There is a more noisy tapperty top end sound to turbo models, certainly until warm.
Once warm they quiet down to almost the N/A very low tick over sound but there is a slight difference.
thanks
Samantha
N/A and turbo's have the identical cylinder head & valve train (cams are slightly different) but turbo's run a bit hotter obviously! I suppose the extra heat could make them more prone to needing the shims sorting..

This is also what i thought.
If anyone does have both the turbo model and N/A, have a listen.
I once had a d reg burgandy N/A bought for £150 ( only wanted the good leather seats and private plate )
It had BIG knocking at the bottom ( even without reving ) but the top end was so sweet and quiet.
Had a silver N/A for 4 years and another N/A for about a year and always remarked on how quiet these cars were at tickover.
Every single turbo car i have ever looked at and driven i always noted how slightly more noisy they were, more so when you lift the bonnet up.
I was always aware of hearing those tappets moving.
I will be the first to admit that i have very good ears ( not big ears :) ) and notice these small things.
May not be much of a difference, but it is there??
On another thread i have talked about being offered a manual mk3 turbo car for £300 ( with 2 months mot and tax ) and this one is probably the noisiest tappets i have listened to, certainly when cold ( have not tested the car when warm ) although the car was much quieter after a quick drive.
