Just go through it methodically mate, just to let you know the crash bar has to come out with the bumper, so don't try to get it off without it.

yeah and its pritty heavy hehe ..

basic guide..

Take the sidelight and indicators out and the plastic grill things....
Take the two big bolts out that hold the crash bar and the bumper into place.. u may need to move the headlights up a bit so u can get the bolt out..

There are small bolts behind the grills that u removed.. 1 or 2 on each side i think..

then there are bolt holing it in place in the wheel arch...

adn thats about it i think.. well all i can remember off the top of my head..

ok dokey. I remember you saying it wasn't a nice job to do, but i recon it'll be easyer for me to put the engin in by removing the front end. And i'm hopefully colecting a bumper at billing so all the bolts will be fresh for me when i go to change the bumper. Hopefull i'll have a go this weekend, if i don't get led astray down to the pub lol. My plan is to remove the front end this weekend and put it back together with minimal bolts and probabilly the odd zip tie, untill i'm ready to drop the engine in. That way when the big day comes to dropping the engine in it shouldn't take long to strip the front end off (or so the plan goes lol) In case anone is wondering why i'm puting the front end back together and not leaving it stripped off till the engine goes in, i don't have a workshop/ garage or even a drive way, it's getting done in my resedental car park :violin:

if ya thinking about removing all the front end ... and u look at the front top crossmember.. it prob aint a godo idea to remove it ..

i did this but got away with it... i guess it a structual thing and the car will start bending in funny ways if u aint lucky.. and nothingn will bolt back up afterwards cos the holes r in the wrong place hehe..

Shurely the shell ain't that flimsy??? Removed the front slam pannel in lots of cars never remember having a problem lineing up the bolts.

You're making a WHOLE lot more work for yourself doing this, as long as your hoist raised the engine enough to get the engine out it will go back in just fine without having to pull the front of the car to bits.

yeah like i said there is only a slim chance really at the car bending but its there :)

and if u do leave the fron crossmember on.. watch out for the oil cooler puipes if u leave then attached to the engine. .they can catch on the crossmember..

There wasn't a head on the engine when i took it out so i the angle wasn't that steep (just had a thought i never said the engine and box is going in as one, that is the best way isn't it?) I had the back end of the car jacked up about a foot of the ground (a foot clearance between the bottom of the wheel and the road) My other problem is the arm on the lift isn't quite long enough by about 4" doesn't sound alot but believe me it caused a bit of messing about taking the engine out, had to jack the car up and put blocks between the lower suspention arm and the hoist and let the jack down on them to jam the hoist stopping it from pulling into the bumper when i was taking the weight up on the engine. So what do we recon then jack the back end up another foot and make up a bit of box section to extend the arm a little further?

When I swapped my engine last year the arm wasn't long enough, got it out OK but getting back in was a four hour nightmare :crybaby: :banghead: In that case, the easiest solution will be to get a hoist thats long enough ;) but if you can get the bumper off that should give you enough clearance to push the hoist forwards a bit more.

Have fun :)

btw, the plastic strip between the headlights with the Toyota badge on it is a PITA, there are two small bolts holding it to the wing on each side, you have to reach in through the headlight assembly to get to them.

ye i thought i'd have a bit more trouble putting it back in than i did taking it out with the short boom on the hoist, I think i'll have a look at the hoist at work tomorrow and see if i cant find someway of extending it. Is it worth compleatly removing the prop shaft rather than messing about trying to guide it in along with the engine & box, or is it easy enough for me to send one of my mates under the car to guide it in (said the vicor to the actress :) )

it was simple for me to get the engine back in as i had removed that top crossmember.. i suppose if ya want to do it that way then it is easier.. i jsut bolted the crossmember back on after... instead of welding it..
