i had a small leak after a big drive, few spots on the ground after parking. Done a service and with the new semi-synth in, the oil leak has got very bad. Its coming from the top of the engine but is hard to trace, it seems very wet at the back of the CPS and dry above so ive orderd a new seal from Toyota and hopefully yhis will cure the Problem. :banghead:
how much did it cost ?
also whats CPS(cam position sensor) ?
Yeah i think its coming from around that area.. but its qutie bad really :(
What did u order a new cam seal yeah ?
Mine seems to be :ewww: oil badly at the rear of the engine too, strong smell of burnt oil after a good run, no smoke from exhaust, but lots of oil spots on the back bumper, anyone got any ideas (where is this seal your talking about)
at the front of theengnie where the cams r driven by the belt..

No its at the side of the engine, just behind the power steering Tank. It goes on to the head quite near the front of the engine, if you look ya can miss it

Right if its at the side of the engine it usually the o ring on the cps .. if its broken or worn it will leak loads
leaking down the back of the engine .. or generally anywhere from the top is usually loose cam covers or knackerd cam cover gaskets ... its unlikely for the cam seals to ever leak .. unless they have been disturbed / damaged in which case replacement is a must.. however leakage will be obvious when the cambelt cover is removed :umm:

Definately think my engine is getting her revenge on you for killing the rest of the car, Mike

hehe..
u remember that little oikl leak the engine always had... well its that but has just got worse...
i suppose it could be CPS as the oil seems to come ddown and drip on the floor from 2 places...
the first is right under the crank shaft thing.
second is comes down around the power steering pump..
so i assumes it cooming from the top then splitting when it hits somthing.
Dont think its the rocker seals as i have tightened then up and it seens dry around them..
how much did the seal for the CPS cost ya ??
If the CPS seal has gone then you'll see some black baked on crud on the exhaust heatshield just underneath it. Cam seals could be tricky to spot, if you take the black plastic timing belt cover off you won't see much except the black metal "faceplate" on the front of the head, the leak will be behind that so you need to take the gears off the cams and a few other bits to remove the metal plate.

Sounds to me like crankshaft oil seals. :( Not a very nice job to do.
Camshaft oil seals can be ordered from Toyota and are quite reasonable and also easy to change.
i dont think it would be the crankshaft seal.. that was my first thought.. as the oil is coming is dripping from 2 places so that suggests to me it coming from high up the engine and having time to hit stuff and split off in 2 directions... thats why i thought cam seals..
i already took the cam cover off and like Adam said u can only see the black plate... guess ill order the seals from toyota anyway cant hurt donig them :)
Try the camshaft oil seals first as they're cheap and easy.
When the crankshaft oil seals start to leak, it's just a drip onto the belly plate. If they get really bad the oil coats the exhaust side of the block and all around the steering pump and oil pressure sensor.
the belts r dry.. so yeah ill go for the cam shaft ones first :)
grrr donig the cam shart seals today noe of the bolts snpped in te head that scured the camsahft in place.. why fook why.. arrgh
weill have to ty and get it out tomoz now :(
Anyway it looks liek it was the camshaft seal leaking.. one did not appear to be in properally . doh..

Revenge...she ain't happy with you ;) lol
well managed to get it out but hda to brake a drill bit o do it hehe..
started donig the timing but i got hungry then lol... will sort that out tomoz.. i hate timing belts arrrgh
well well put everything back togeather got the timing roght :)
but guess what i still have my oil leak..
i think ti could be the CPS as i did notice burt on oil under it.... humm will swap that with the other one i have tomoz jsut to see if it makes a difference.. if it dont then im all out of ideas lol
grr and jsut to think i spent my weekend doing the cam seals for no bloody reason.. well at leasti learnt how to do the timing...
oh and please tell me i dont have to take all the timing belt off to do the CPS..
:flush:
arrrrgh arrgh arrgh arggh
ok no the CPS thing was leaking a bit but no where enar enough.. the car is still pissing out oil so it has to b the crank seal... why oh bloody why..
anyway dont suppose anyone has a brand new one hanging around ??
and i need to get the car on the road by the weekend lol as my astras mot and tax run out doh..
Ring Toyota and tell them to stick it on VOR, you'll have it by on Thursday if you ring tomorrow.

If you get really stuck i can have one away by next day delivery for ya, but as Nicks says, if you talk to toyota before 12 tomorrow it will be in next morning
ah cool got a mate poping to toyota for me tomoz :)
Ring Toyota and tell them to stick it on VOR, you'll have it by on Thursday if you ring tomorrow.I believe the crankshaft front end has two oil seals (at least Toyota charged me for two and gave me two knackered oil seals back after the work was done) and it's also worthwhile getting new woodruff keys for the timimg gear and the crankshaft pulley which are pennies.
well i would u see but i have not idea what a woodruff key is lol
sure i can do the work myself but i dont know the names of things lol
well i would u see but i have not idea what a woodruff key is lol
A woodruff key is like a metal orange (the fruit) segment, which fits into a slot in the crankshaft and protrudes from the surface, fitting into a groove in the inside of the timing gear or crankshaft pulley. The idea is to locate the gear or pulley in the correct position on the shaft and prevent it from moving round the shaft. They can get a little battered with wear and thus let the timing gear or pulley move on the shaft.
ah cool thanks for the info
