View Full Version : Fuel System Question

Finished putting the NA back together today after fitting an MHG and then attempted to start it. Got the distributor timing wrong, so fixed that. Then noticed a nasty smell of petrol. Turns out the No1 injector is leaking at the joint with the fuel rail - a bit of a pisser 'cos I'd fitted new O-rings and grommets.

I had initially tested it after refitting the fuel rail ,by connecting the battery and turning on the ignition but not activating the starter motor and there were no leaks. In fact the leak only happens when the engine is turning.

So the question is:-

Does the fuel pump only activate when the engine is turning ie when starting and when the engine is running?

IIRC it primes when ignition on, then won't fully operate till it senses the engine turning over.

That explains it then.

All fixed and running, just got to get it MOT'ed now.

Had managed to crush the O-ring on the injector.

Getting the ignition timing right with the distributor is a bitch. Did it by trial and error in the end. Much easier with the CPS on the turbo.

Thanks for your help Nick.

When I pulled my rail off I found that the garage who did the last headgasket job (~5 years ago) had managed to crush 3 of the 6 grommits, hadn't seated them in the head properly. Can't believe I'd had no problems with it like that!
New set of seals put in, looks neater anyway :)
