One of a couple of things...
Either you got a water leak on your windscreen seal or the scuttle area thats letting in rain from above the dash...
or
You got a hole in the firewall which is letting dampness into the rear of the dash.
Check carpet in both footwells..carefully under and around pedal box especially. Slightest bit of dampness in the footwell area and you got a leak. Check all body drains too, one or more can be blocked and the rain is going out in another method, ie following wiring as it usually acts as the perfect bridge.
The firewall might be breached near to the coloumn pass thru area, there should be a rubber grommit there, they perish..check it carefully with fingers..and all other rubber grommits on firewall. Any that are perished either replace or if not too bad, grease them up with vaseline or white petroleum jelly.
If the screen surround or scuttle is leaking, use silicone sealant gently and carefully.
Check that everything is watertight again with either a hose or watering can. If you are careful with these checks, you should be able to source the problem and deal with it effectively and without too much expense.
right will have a dampness test BRB
just looked at carpets in car both dry as a bone, cant see right good so ill have another go when i finish work tomorow morning
but as far as i know i ave no water leaks anywhere
err its been raining ???
been a bloody nice day ehre in wales..
Isn't there a electrical bit in the boot that has something to do with the lights that corrodes?? especially if you've got leaky rear lights......someone will be along shortly that nows the name of it........................

do you mean the lamp failure module??? , that corodes like mad and causes dash light probs
That's the one :D (90 odd hours this week playing havoc on me tiny brain)
would that cause outside lights to come on aswell?
thinking about it i have just cured a leaky tailgate :)

There are loads of them. But try these ones:
1. behind the air filter box
2. behind the fuse box/diagonstics plug
Try looking over the engine bay after a rain storm/car wash to findout where the water goes
Good Luck
there is a set of earths under the hard plastic of the air filter with 3 or 4 on, they get a bit wet , will have a good luck

just as i thought, all nice and dry weather now,
oooooooooo lights turned off :)

BTW just for reference for everyone, the lamp failure module will only cause the warning light ( handbrake / fluid ) light to come on and will cause the cruise control to stop functioning, first things to check if you get this light on after pressing the brake pedal is the fluid in master cylinder and the brake lights, then check for corrosion on the module.
Hope all is ok now Stevie
