View Full Version : Tapping sound under load
Just developed a loud tapping sound when the engine is under load, doesn't do it at idle or when revving so it's hard to pinpoint.
Am I right in thinking this is classic blowing exhaust gasket symptoms? Time to order that helicoil kit methinks.....

How loud is the tapping? .. could be a few things .. as you say check the manifold bolts and also the timing may have gone out but its unlikely ...
Hate to be a barer of bad news tho Tapping under load is in some cases the signs of a forthcomming big end faliure .. if you cant find the source of the noise drain the oil and check for particles of bearing (brass / silvery)
:fingers in ears: lalalalalalala :p
It is quite loud but only noticeable with the windows down at lowish speeds. Only noticed it today after spending yesterday flushing the cooling system but I can't see what I would have disturbed.
I do however have 1 manifold stud missing, kept meaning to get round to it after stripping it out during a BHG fix but it held up perfectly until now...
No other probs, car is silent at idle and pulls well even with this noise.
Ta for the comments :)
Every blowing manifold gasket I've ever heard has done it at idle, while revving and while under load.
I'd have to agree with Ed.
I've had this on other cars (only under load), mainly fords for some reason... i *think* its pinking.. or pre-ignition.
Worth checking the cam belt and timing as well as sorting this manifold stud then. Maybe I'm missing the noise at idle and while revving, it just gets LOUD under load. Trying not to think of the other :crybaby:
ok does it happen around 2500rpm and just over ???
cos the 2 tiems my big ends went it started like that. .would not make a sound on idle :(

there should be mediacal terms in the dictionary for us lot. BHG paranoia, and BHG denial. :)
hope it all turn out alright fella!
blowing gaskets sound quite 'ticky' until the motor is hot and things have expanded to take up the slack. Buggered big ends sound quite thumpy.. (sorry best way i can explain!) gaskets tend to be uniform in behaviour (hot/cold) but big ends do odd things like thump when hot but not cold or for the first few secs when starting.. (my two N/A's have done that  )

i'm with Adi on this one, just loud pinking, mine does it, especially when hot, doesn't seem to matter what grade of petrol i stick in it either. (was going to post this question myself) :banghead: :banghead:

[QUOTE]
It seems to happen right from idle up to 4k or so (don't usually take it over that) as long as it's under load. Happens whether engine is hot or cold.
Actually more of a 'tick' than a 'tap' but definitely no 'thump' (is this making any sense at all? :P)
Ordered a recoil set for the manifold anyway, just been told there's a 2 week wait :banghead: Anyone know any good suppliers?
I've actually never heard an engine pinking properly, but I would have thought it wouldn't be quite this loud....
And yes, I am now utterly paranoid about noises! :D
its hard to describe pinking.. its kinda like a dull rattle.. and it seems like the sound is *inside* the engine when its heard from inside the car..
If it was manifold gaskets etc it would only really be noticeable with the bonnet open.. whereas pinking is very very definitive and easily heard from inside the car... it also seems random with no definitive rhythm.
Ah, unfortunately this is a very regular tick/tap increasing in frequency along with the engine speed. Can't hear it with the windows up or above wind noise with them down at high speed...
I'm actually wondering if I've buggered the rad fan when I was working on it, looking at it spinning it seems slightly out of true.....then again I'm probably looking for easy answers in the wrong places....
Cheers anyway!

I've got a similar problem myself, like a rattling under load past 2500, and a misfire on one of the cylinders, can be heard within the car and causes a loss of power. Mechanic I've just been to see has suggested it may just be a need for leads and plugs.
Are you having misfire problems as well?

I have recently bought the car from Mart, and funny enough, misfire has started but on 2 cylinders, had Craig (supra89) and Simon(gtstarga) look at it and they also have suggested plugs and leads after a lot of messing about with various other electrical things.
will let you know how it goes

Just been to see Nick at totally custom, he reckons turbo has gone, and the misfire is caused by oil on one of the plugs. Gotta say relieved it wasn't big end, know of a turbo for sale? pm me. Hope new leads sorts your problems out.
