While the car is off the road for a while I am going to concetrate on a few detailing bits. Today I stripped off the heat sheilds from the turbos, brake cylinder, clutch cylinder ready for painting. I also have the cam covers off along with plug gallay and cam wheel cover. I am hoping to paint these over the next few weeks when I get the time.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/gtstarga/Buildup003.jpg
Engine looking a bit sparce. Most of the screws were loose so need to keep an eye on them when i refit the cam covers back on.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/gtstarga/Buildup001.jpg
Next thing is to get some more blue 3mm pipeing and start replace the original hoseing.
thats what my 1jz looks like at the moment. except a lot dirtier , no exhaust cam and broken shimbucket.
But as soon as thats fixed and runs a right good clean up is in order!
theres mouse poo in mine!
Did you notice the cam cover screws dont seem to go in very far?
couple of turns and theryre out
Does anybody know whats inside thecam covers? there seems to be a cavity in the "roof" of them thats about an inch thick.

Yes they did not seem to screw in far. I will take a photo of the inside for you later. They have other plates rivited into the top.

Are you keeping the car now mate.
gtstarga
05-06-07, 07:27 PM
Yes keeping it now. I have decieded to take it off the road for now and just fiddle round getting little jobs done. I wanted to do some detailing on it from the start.
I have also come to realise that I will never find one as good as this and I would be gutted if I sell it now. Like I have said in the past, there is nothing wrong with the body work or engine whatsoever. Only little bits that need doing, the biggest job really is the drivers seat.

Sounds like it will be a beast. Have thought about getting some 2JZGTE injectors for mine and a boost controller to take it up a little. Have read up on the 1JZ turbos and you can run 330-340 BHP fairly reliably. But I cannot afford to do that at the moment so maybe in the future.

Nod thinks i have about 300bhp at the wheels so that should be around 350/360bhp at the flywheel. Should be fun driving back from the midlands.

BTW the cam covers have oil baffle plates inside them (the top inch or so), its there to stop the cams splashing oil up and it getting sucked out through the breathers.

My crappy camera phone mate - that blue is pearl candy blue metallic (not the toy town like it appears in pic) - looks better in the flesh. Honest.
Did you get blitz injectors mate of ebay? I was watching a set but they have just been sold - Damn!

Mate that is a ridiculous price - nice one!!!
Your seat btw, i have found the original black material if you haven't got it sorted yet let me know ( i have got to get mine done too ) gonna get the recaro name stitched where the old lettering used to be while i am at it.
Was your car for sale on ebay several months ago?

I have managed to source it through my local trimmer, but it took bloody ages and many samples later - hey presto the original recaro fabric!
I bought a few metres of it up as we use it here on others vehicles, but my trimmer i use only does local work so he doesn't p&p anything out etc and he is wholesale/trade only.
If you want some mate it comes 1.3m wide and priced per metre (1metre would generally repair the front drivers seat easily) and it costs £39.13 per metre incl p&p and vat. I can certainly get it to you mate if you wanted.
This is 'Genuine Recaro' fabric though not a cheap imitation.
Sorry mate wasn't trying to plug anyone but this isn't available off the shelf - not that i know of ...

What osrt of price to do my 2 front seats? I would bring them to him as it is not that far from me. I am thinking just the black surrounds at the moment.

Injectors arrived today, waiting for the map sensor to arrive which should be tomorrow. Get the cam covers done next week or week after and get it all back together and get it up and running. Get the seat sorted then pretty much done.

Cam covers were painted today. Also painted the heat sheilds for the clutch master cylinder and brake master cylinder. Also painted the ends of the strut brace to blend it all in.

Well chuffed today, got injectors in and map sensor fitted. I think the phrase "Drop-in" when talking about injectors should be banned!!!!! A bit more work than I hoped for! Ah well, not a difficult job just arkward to get the fuel rail out without removing the plenium chamber.
MAP sensor was very easy to fit and took 2 mins, well 3 had to extend the vac pipe to get just right!!!
Getting some blue hoseing tomorrow to replace some split hose's and some detailing.

Here are pictures of the injectors I fitted today

Went and got myself some Samco hoses today. Replaced the 2 on the intake as the were not in the best of condition when I replaced the turbo's. Also these are more free flowing as the factory ones are very narrow!!! Also when I removed the cam covers I split 2 breather hoses so replaceing them too.

Also here is the MAP sensor fitted last night.

I think you miss the point!!! The way the 2JZGTE MAP sensor is made is differant to the 1JZGTE. All about the details!!!
i recognise that blue paint :D
What did you do to prepare the belt cover? i think i just used standard primer.. its okay but can bubble off if one area gets really hot.
gtstarga
05-07-07, 04:50 PM
I prepared it with the guidence of my body shop guy. Chemicaly cleaned then washed and scotched, then painted and baked. Yes clolour is similar but cost was a slight factor!!! He had it in the gun for another job. Plus it looks sexy!!!

You know it makes sense :notworthy
you might as well change that pcv valve whilst the covers are off. That one is prone to blocking and reputedly causing turbo seal blow by. The newer one is straight, same as the 2JZ valve. You'll need a new bit of pipe as well.. about £20 in total.

Ok could not wait till Saturday!!!! Fitted it back together today.
Had to fit the two at the same time as the breather pipe in the middle would have been a pain in the ar$e to fit after. Was a bit fiddely with just me but got there in the end.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/gtstarga/Build005.jpg
Then coil packs back in and remembering to put all the loom under the hose!!!
Also had to trim the hose that goes into the cam cover as this was just a peice I bought.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/gtstarga/Build006.jpg
And the final result of all fitted. I am very pleased and think it looks great.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/gtstarga/Build021.jpg
Also started taking dome of the brakets off and spraying them too. Here the fan fluid done.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/gtstarga/Build022.jpg
Also washed and polished the drivers side under the bonnet. starting to look good!!!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/gtstarga/Build020.jpg
Also completed some of the hoseing.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/gtstarga/Build018.jpg
Hopeing to have the engine bay done in the next few weeks. Will then start on the interior.
looking good simon, One question though. doesnt your car have abs? and whats that small box with the hose going to it in the area where the abs module would be on another car?
gtstarga
08-07-07, 11:12 PM
No the R model does not have ABS. The box.....No idea!!
gtstarga
17-07-07, 03:37 PM
Ok put everything back together in the engine bay today. Pleased with the result. One or two things I would like to do but for now they will have to wait.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/gtstarga/Build024.jpg
the box is the charcoal canister.. form of emission control in japland.
Hey, you cloning my engine? :D

No, well a little but not going for the polished stuff!
:D only messing mate.. looks good. I think the cam covers suit it better than polished anyway...
you going for i/c hardpipes as well? i always thought that would finish mine off, but could never find any decent ones or anyone to make them..

I would like Blue Smaco but finding them will be fun!!!!! If I can afford to get a FMIC then hard pipes will be a must. So what the future brings I do not know!
Simon - check driftmotion.com - they have decently priced DIY kits of hardpipes and FMIC's

Sun was out today and could not resist putting more hoses on!!!! Got this superflex Samco Hose (http://www.samcosport.com/flex.asp). Great for those annoying water pipes at the back. Not cheap at around £25 a meter for 16mm.
Anyway here are some more pics!!! The sun really makes it look better than strip lighting!!!
Please with the finish that was achieved on the plastic covers.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/gtstarga/Build042.jpg
Also used 1200grit sandpaper and some Autosol to polish up the power steering resivour, very easy to do. Just use some Autoglym Paint renovator as a lubricant.

noticed that your inlet pipe is blistering like mine (although nowhere near as bad).. the amount of heat that that side of the engine gets from the fan is crazy... i've always thought that this is one of the only times where a vent on the bonnet would be actually needed...
gtstarga
19-07-07, 11:07 AM
Yes it is quite bad. A bit annoying as it is the worst thing on the engine now. I am a bit worried that if I put Samco on there they will blister too.

One or two companies do supply high temperature silicone hoses which can handle somewhat highr levels of heat. Probably best to speak to someone who deals with race engines, though I think I saw it in a Demontweeks catalogue a while back.
I'd be happy if i could make my 1JZ look like your "before" pic! mine looks like its been stood for 3 years (it has) and is coved in oxidation and animal droppings. Still, It'll make for more of a contrast when i tidy it up!

Ok I finialy got the fuel pump fitted today. Pain in the ar$e job to do by myself, but i got there.
Here is the pump in place.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/gtstarga/Build069.jpg
Was trying to get the fuel line off but it would not budge so left it there, but after trying to put the tank back in I had to attack the line again to completly remove it. Had to remove it from the fuel filter itself. Lost some skin on my arm and knuckles in the process!!!!
Here is a pic of the fuel filter (I know some one was asking where it was so took a pic!!!)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/gtstarga/Build070.jpg
After getting it right out fitted it in and started getting it back together. Doing it on my own was a nightmare!!!!!! Took ages to get the bolts to start on the thread but once one was easy!
So went to see if my handy work was good, and no start!!!!!!!!! Heart sank!!!! Hoping i could see if there was pressure took the pipe of the regulator. Could not tell. Undid the other end with the banjo on and and fuel poured out. Did it back up, turned the key and she fired into life!!!!
Took along the driveway and she was perfect!!!! Lit the tires up very easy!!!
Not sure wether to use the SAFC now!!! Do not like the look of it in the car as it is out of place with the rest of it!!!
So my question is do I really need it??? I know sets up better, but might save for a more useable standalone or some thing else.
Anyway, really pleased and thanks to all for the help on the parts and advice. Next job is the seat and I will be happy with it for now. Just MOT, Tax and insurance left to go!!!!
The 1J runs rich consistently through the range, i think the japs bunged a load of fuel in to safeguard against det, so using the SAFC supposedly trims everything up nicely and unleashes a bit of untapped power.. i'd fit it :)

Well a quick update on the progress of my car!!! Been really busy landscaping my garden.....Well I say landscaping it is more moving a ton of crap and a few ton of earth. The new astra has earned it's keep already!
Next week the seats come out and go to be re-trimmed. My origanal plan was to have the seat done back to the factory trim. But after looking at a photo the other day I noted that the wear has increased big style. I only did 3500 miles last year in the car!! So they will be off to sunny Devon to be cared for by Tara and the bolster's done in black leather. Only having the fronts done at the moment as cash is limited!!!
Next job is MOT. Needs a balljoint and a steering gator, so 2 easy jobs! Then off for 2 rear tyres and a damn good clean. Then it will be booked into Nod's place for SAFC fitting and tuning. I will also be having it on the rolling road as I just want to know whats it is putting out!
Called about insurance today too. Was a bit gutted the other day when Direct Line qouted be £880. My heart almost fell into my stomach!!!! But thanks to Stu (Supradupra) who gave me the number for A-Plan (08450 711234) I got it at £420!!!!!!!!!!!! Over half the price and protected no-claims!!!. They were really good on getting me a qoute for my second car (The Astra).
Wish I could have had the car to some of the shows this year, but having ot off the road has helped me get on with some major house stuff. Was gutted to miss JAE AGAIN this year. But all is not lost with the NEC show in November.

i can say that Tara does a grand job with the leather, i had a full interior done for one of my supras, well worth the money, (blue and cream leather in a white supra looks the t*ts..) and i'll be getting the other one done soon..
wise choice getting the bolsters done on your seats...recaro's were a bad idea in a supra

Yes, she does a great job. Seen her work now a few times and always been impressed.
Recaro's were a good idea but the could have asked for something a bit better than tissue paper for the material!!!!!!

Seats were dropped off today at Supraworks for there final fitting....LOL I went there with the intention of just a bolster fix, but I have ended up going for them to be fully retrimmed in leather :D Without being bigheaded..... They gonna look the mutts-nutts!!!!!!! Very original they will be too!
Also got some new bonnet struts from there as mine are becoming worse and worse!!! We need to get viagra for bonnet struts really!!!! LOL
Off to Toyota in the morning as they have not robbed me in a very long time!!! Oil filter fit needs to be collected from the post office and some nice braided pipes made too. So a quick service and MOT and Tax.............OMG it's nearly ready.............. :D So excited I nearly had a wee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
gtstarga
29-09-07, 01:27 AM
Nightmare update. Had some nice shiney pipes made for the oil filter relocation kit.............They are wrong so have to go back, oil filter does not fit, have to change that. Waiting on a boost gauge and pop to mount it, still waiting!!!!
Man It will be a push to finish it on time!
gtstarga
03-10-07, 11:36 PM
Well looks like I am a mad man!!!!! To make the deadline more fun I have now sent the bottom lip spoiler off the front bumper to be sprayed. Was not happy with it so had to be done.
With my want for a little more power I have now purcased myself a Y-pipe and downpipe. Some of you will comment on how this will reduce the life of turbos but, After much more research and many more conversations with people who run this engine, I am typlicaly finding less people with this issue. My turbos are in great condition. Also the boost will remain as standard. The main mods are to the air and fueling of the car. I will not be doing the Y-pipe for NEC as I do not want to over push my luck.
I hope to do a few bit's for the MOT on friday and we almost done, just seats to do!!!!

12-10-07, 01:41 PM
Well got some work done the interior today. A few changes to my orignal idea. I got my boost gauge deliviered and a pod I bought for just 1p on ebay. I wanted to put the gauge on the top of the steering comlum, but the pod was to big and looked pants.
Decieded to forget about the gauge and continue on with the gap under the stereo. For many years I have had a peice of carbon fibre that had been lying around. Hoping this would be perfect I cut it into size, after getting the it sized up I had a brain wave. (A moments silience please, it happens very rarely!!!).
Move the push button start to the carbon fibre panel and the boost gauge in the fag lighter position!!!!
So I did!!!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/gtstarga/Interiorbuildup005.jpg
I am pleased with the look! The boost gauge was a bit of a pain to put into the panel as the U clamp did not take into account the thickness of my application!! So used mole grips and pliers I bent them into a J shape.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/gtstarga/Interiorbuildup011.jpg
And hey presto it worked!!!!
I drilled out the hole for the starter button into the CF panel, but the hole drill thingy made it ever so slightly bigger than i hoped. The button fitted in but was a little loose. So useing a cable tie and a big blob of "No More Nails" it is perfect!!!

Had a very lucky escape too, after changing the last but one wheel I went onto to do the last, as I tried to jack the car up the trolley jack failed on me. Would not go up or hold any weight!!!!! If that had collasped on me I would have been in the crap!!! All done now but have to get a new trollety jack!!!

Well Simon, let's hope you learn from this, never work on a car relying on just the jack!...a seal can fail at anytime, even when just changing a wheel,
when you get the new trolley jack, get yourself a pair of axle stands, could save your life one day

i got a pair of axle stands from halfords, 2 ton £10 i think! my trolley jack is a 2.5 ton thing so it lifts fine but after seeing a jack collapse on a fellow mechanics legs years ago i never chance it..............
i always use them, it takes seconds to slide them under and you have a jack free too!!

Ok at last they have arrived!!!!!!!!!! Went down to collect the seats today and fitted them straight away!! Due to circumstances and something I did not think of they changed ever so slightly from the origanal plan. I did not first do for the grey pipeing but after one thing was not possable I changed my mind. I am very chuffed with them.
Putting them back in gave me a headache for a moment, the rails had slid out alignment with each other and I could not get the bolt holes to line up. Sorted that, and in they slipped!!!

Ok not done much latley, maily due to hating being cold and not going out to the garage!!! I am planning on polishing up the pipe work on the turbo side over the next few weeks. I will update my progress on that when I get started.
Once they are done I will remove the turbos and fit my new toys. I managed to get my hands on a Y-pipe a while ago.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/gtstarga/buildup245.jpg
It is a nightmare job and I do not look forward to it, but the end result should impress. I also got some more Samco hoses, for the top and bottom water pipes.
Hopeing to get done by mid march, then get the SAFC fitted and get it tuned up and running perfectly.
its not that bad taking the turbos off mate.. you could have them off and back on again in a few hours. It gets easier after the first time :)

Afraid no-one from here made it to Combe!
Well today was finnally the day of getting the turbo's back on! And what a crap day it became. After getting the turbo's into place i found that they did not fit back onto the two manifolds. This was easily taken care of by removing one of the four gaskets that were in between the manifold/turbo's. After hauling these back off and on again the new Y-pipe fouled the engine ount stopping the turbos going back on!!!!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/gtstarga/buildup005-1.jpg
This meant getting out the surgical tool of the angle grinder and making a small notch in the mount. After getting this all on and will lots of cut's and swearing all was back together under the bonnet. I then offered the downpipe up the new Y-pipe. It's to low and does not de-cat the exhuast system :crybaby::rant:
The whole point of me buying these parts was custom to the car and de-catted it. I am now going to have to get a custom exhuast place to make me a part up to fit. I really annoyed about this but as it was second hand and bought from the states I cannot do much. I would not recommend that anyone does this mod thinking that it will bolt together easily. It may be the fact that this was supposed to be for a soarer but I am not sure!
I am hopfully going to have the exhuast fitted this week, but getting it there will be the fun part! Bit loud at the moment.
Oh and to top things off I did my back in!!!!!!
stu, maybe that problem is simillar to the one that was found trying to fit those obx na headers a few years back. with our steering column being in the way.
edit: simon even lol

aye, cud be a lhd car has different mounts etc
Mounts would be in the same place for either sides.
altough havin said that, those headers fouled the column not the engine mount.
I had the same problem with a y-pipe/down pipe combo. It was designed for a soarer too but even at that It wouldn't bolt up to the tubbies so to the bin it went. I think they're a real hit and miss type of thing - some people have got them in though and you look half way there.
I had a bit of hassle fitting an exhaust to mine a while back and had to go to a welder for help - drove there with only the down pipe on and the check engine light was on and she'd only limp along. My last one had a bad blow in the front pipe and the limp mode thing would happan too so you might have a frustrating drive to the exhaust people. You might be fine but just to let you know in case.....

Seems as though it is not the best thing to buy then!!!!
Luckly the exhaust place is less than 1/2 mile away so the drive may be loud but not to long!
This particular kit was meant to be for the Supra but I am really don't think it was made useing a car just useing an old downpipe.
Off to get the oil and fluids to get it all running. May as well do an oil change at the same I thought!

Well I picked the car up today from having the down pipe fitted, extended and modified.
After all the hard work and issues I have had from this bloomin pipe, being to short to de-cat (which was my main aim), sitting to low that it will hit the ground at every bump, having to cut the engine mount to get it to fit, not to mention the cost of buying the pipe getting from the states, Toyota's stupidly priced gaskets (one i had to remove cos the Y-pipe was not quite the right width), fluids (won't use anything but Toyota Red, so thats not cheap), Oil and oil filter, a few beer tokens to my mate for helping me out and having better tools than me!!!! Then I had to pay a Exhaust specialist to do the last bit.
So cost of fitting a Y-pipe.
Y-pipe and Downpipe (second hand) £185inc P&P
Gaskets from Toyota £110
Fluids, oil and oil filter £75
A beer night £40
Downpipe fitting and fabricating £140
All in £550.................... :flush:
Was it worth the hassle and money....................
Fook me yes!!!!! She pulls like a fcuking train. The noise is fantastic, wastegates chattering away, the rushing boost noise. The noise prevously was very subtile, but now it is in your face and screams. I will get some pics of the exhaust from underneath at some point (when this infernal rain fecks off!!) and a little video of the noise.

just to clear this up (i know how old this thread is) i bought this car from simon, i then sold 80% of the car to bigsupe.
as simon has scarperred and to both our dissapointments there were several things wrong with the car, simon forgot to tell me or didnt have a clue about,
the first being the front passenger lower balljoint, it was completely loose and who ever fitted it didnt have a clue, it did look rather new so il assume simon fitted it. was a serious safety issue
as well as the cheap china fake walbro fuel pump which found bigsupe later.
also simon told me it had a w58 gearbox which we all know jza70 model r's dont have, and the supposed overfuel problem which simon claimed, was actually warn out turbo's he had fitted, but i suspected this was the case.
some of his other handywork, included hacking the drivers side engine mount so his fancy y pipe would clear. it obviously didnt occur to him to just modify the stainless steel y pipe and not mess with something structual like the engine mount, all of this can be found in this thread although im sure there were no closeups of his bodges,
look for yourselves. anything else i can remember il update later
If it was like that when you bought it, fair enough, but otherwise most of that could be nearly 2.5 years wear and tear or documented in the thread.
Either way, not wishing to poke my head in the lions mouth, it does sound like you're having a pop at the guy about a car you bought years ago.

some of his other handywork, included hacking the drivers side engine mount so his fancy y pipe would clear. it obviously didnt occur to him to just modify the stainless steel y pipe and not mess with something structual like the engine mount, all of this can be found in this thread although im sure there were no closeups of his bodges,
look for yourselves. anything else i can remember il update later

If it was like that when you bought it, fair enough, but otherwise most of that could be nearly 2.5 years wear and tear or documented in the thread.
Either way, not wishing to poke my head in the lions mouth, it does sound like you're having a pop at the guy about a car you bought years ago.
Drake
i am having a pop lol, at the end of the day he sold me a car with things wrong with it, when i asked him is there anything i should know about the car.
i understand what sold as seen means, but when you buy a car from someone on a forum which is a cummunity, you would think that would mean something. i would have happily bought the car either way as it was rather special at some points.
but when a load bearing steering and suspension part was fitted in an unsecure and amatuerish way, potentially putting my life at risk, i wouldnt want anyone looking at his work for guide to repair.
I was in two minds when he said the car was smoking due to overfuel. the turbo seals were knakered obviously becuase he decatted it and fitted that poxy y pipe, the condition of the blades were another thing altogether, most of the edges were missing and the shaft play was dare i say it....
like a di ck in a bucket lol
you may think its petty for me to bring this up all this time later, im an honest guy and dishonesty really grinds my gears.
it was me,then bigsupe who lost out on this. at least the car had a new lease of life, becuase im sure if simon kept the bodges going it would end up a ditch decoration. shame on him

And then I tuned it to 400bhp with a Gt35R then sold it to a chap from the Danish SAS equiv, who has changed the turbo again and from what i heard is pushing nearly 600bhp
Nearly 20yr old 1jz what a lump
im so pleased it went into good hands, yourself and the danish SAS equiv, funnily enough i had another forum member come and view the car before bigsupe,
with his "mechanic" and tried telling me the engine was tired and needed a rebuild, then afterwards offered me the ridiculas price of £1000 for the car complete, obviously he had champagne dreams and lemonade pockets
nice to know the old girl is pushing big numbers tho, did he rebuild the engine before the big horsepower increase or was it all standard?
