View Full Version : Water collecting in rear hatch

Rite anybody else have this problem?
I tend to get water collect inside my rear hatch, this collects inside the hatch where the rear wiper motor is and sometimes in the inner plastic hatch trim.
HOW THE SMEG DOES THIS GET THERE??
I have tried everything to find out where it comes from, found a slight hole in the rear screen glue and bunged that up and also slight gap where the metal side members join the bottom of the hatch.
I have spent many hours laying in the rather roomy??!! confines of my boot while a friend goes mental with a jet wash, do you think it leaks? HELL NO! yet a couple of days of light rain and water has collected again!
Anybody come across this before and mannaged to solve it or is this a deliberate design of Toyota's to allow planting of potatoes in the boot??

try looking at the middle section of your rear spoiler as mine had 2 bolts holding it down and the a hole 1/2 inch big with nothing to fill it may get in there take the rear spoiler off and have a look at it.

i think this might be a common one. i found a small pool of water in the spare wheel well, but cant find find out where its coming in at all.
i might be a bit closer to finding though, as i had the panels off behind the rear passenger side lights.
with these off i could see the screws that hold the grey side strips on, and one of the screws was rusted so badly it dissintegrated when i touched it. the rest looked brand new so i assume that a lot of water is getting to that screw. (its the one that is behind the 'turbo' of the '3.0i turbo' writing!)
cant be any more help than that im afraid ;)

I too have this problem, when I lift the boot, water runs out of each side of the plastic trim, not much but enough to piss you off, spoiler coming off next week anyway so will have a look.

Yep, found a leak there in the past, took both clusters off and cleaned all the compost out from behind them (used it for the potatoes)
Also found that where the rear panels are spot welded together just below each light a hairline crack had formed in the sealent they use, this drew in water which collected in the spare wheel well, sealed these up and problem was solved, just cant get to the bottom of this hatch leak, its almost like it dribbles down the wiper motor loom.
could always install hanging baskets on the boot cover hooks?!:cheeky:

Its either comming in via the spoiler as stated above or via the rear wiper where it passes through, quite a common fault i believe.

The seal around the wiper spindle will let water in if it's worn; could be worth a look.

Thats what I thought removed the rear spoiler and wiper arm and spindle seal and the 5 nuts that hold on the lower screen trim cleaned out the compost and got the trusted silicone and sealed up the lot reassembled think job done
WRONG!!!!! :banghead: still got the dam leak :banghead:
I now think that it is coming in passed the screen down the seam and getting scouped up by the hatch interior trim another job for the silicone kid

Think I may try the spoiler but, I,ve had this off the car before and seem to remember putting new seals on it and wax oiling under the mounts too.
What I dont get is you go at it for hours with a 250 bar pressure washer and not so much as a drip, then you get a light dew one morning and find a water feature has been formed!! Must be magic, will investigate further, if I find anything I'll let ya all know, ever hopefull

Stuey, did you actually take the wiper motor out and silicone the internal spindle mating surface, or did you just take the rubber seal off and silicone that? Siliconing the whole thing worked in my case.
:cheeky:
Love your website by the way - the things you've done to that car are amazing! Very impressed. :notworthy

From what people are saying here I will try the spoiler and wiper motor again and seal these up with silicone, the hanging baskets are just simply silly looking :)
Was going to attempt this today but rained away so give it a go soon and let ya know if it solves the problem.
Cheers guys.

Take a bit of advice from one who has done it more than once with hatchbacked cars_____
Don't go blocking every single solitary hole, gap or space you find because you may well find your boot either fills with water because the drain holes are blocked or you will find the boot starts sweating and then instead of growing potatoes you will have a nice selection of mushrooms.
Might be useful to check the rubber hatch seal rubbers, they get a bit soft and floppy sometimes, when that happens they let rain in. Hoses don't give the right pressure into the rubbers that a good run down the road at 60 does.
I had this for years, turned out that it was the window bottom trim, took it off cleaned out ****e put bitumin tape over bloody great holes for tiny screws and tightened it all up. Job done NO LEAKS, thank god it, was driving me fooking mad. Peter

thats what my money has been on, I have noticed the water collecting in there,
Both of mine have this problem, I resealed the spoiler on the NA and it improved heeps but still does it,
off with the trim me thinks, cheers peter
If its only leaking in when raining then you might want to have a look at the rubber that sits on the car that seals when you shut the boot cos its obviously running in rather than getting in ?? i know what i mean if the rubber strip is perished at the bottom above the numbr plate it might be running in down the sides of the tailgat into/under the rubber and into the boot

I hope it works i'd be interested to know
I am taking mine to the local shrine and letting the preist "purify" it. The bloody water somehow is getting under the plastic trim. It is driving me crazy! :banghead:
Anyone have any suggestions?

I have tried doing the suggestions in the thread but the bloody thing still leaks! I have spent a lot of time in the boot looking for leaks and see nothing.

If water is getting into the plastic cover over the wiper motor, take off the lower trim of the rear window. The holes are too big for the screws, put some mastic over the holes and replace trim. If it still leaks into trim it must be coming from the side trim and under the glass (unlikely) as there is nowwhere else in that area for a leak. This only applies if water is in plastic cover. If in boot area look at light seal. Of course you have checked that the spoiler isn't leaking first haven't you?. HTH :notworthy

i'll ditto that - nice site and nice car stuey! just been having a look.
I'm gonna try that LED replacement idea. its on the list after build a garage, and rebuild and fit a 7Mgte. so not imminently then..
I resealed the spoiler and put tape over the holes. They are about twice the size of the screws! I broke the bloody retaining clips in the process. Might have already been broken. My local Toyota dealer says that they are no longer manufactured. Can I get new bolts and retaining clips in the UK?

Glad the site is comming in helpfull
So far the things I have found are:
*Hole in rear screen mastic (under trim) this I sealed.
*Cracks in mastic sealing around boot panels. These are where the different panels join eachother under the lights, its sealed with goo and painted, with time this had cracked and leaked filling only the spare wheel well tho.
*Sealed round spoiler.
*Sealed large holes for the lower trunk windshield trim.
*Stripped the wiper motor and replaced orings.
Still water gets in!
Seems it can dribble down the sides of the trunk lid and enter where the two side members join the main panel with the spoiler on...sealed these up too.
It still leaks!
If you attack it with a gentle hose or a jet wash it wont leak..it seems to only do it wen the car is stood still.
Running out of ideas.. car is a bit old to start pulling all the trunk lid trim off.
Due for more investigation soon!! Seems there are many many weak spots water can get in through so sadly no definitive answer as yet.

Next time its pissing down, climb in the back, lay down and see where it's getting in. Then let us know, it will save all of us doing it. :cheeky: :cheeky:

WOW! that ICE looks real nice. Shame to get water all over it. :notworthy
I think it is fixed! Got a new lower trim piece from toyoya, The top and bottom are still available. Rained one day and no water is under the plastic cover.
Will have to wait for a bunch of rain days to know for sure.
Thank You Peter!!

handy hint for anyone that has tried everything else. If water is still getting in the boot.
I know its not in the hatch itself but.
Try this the seals around the exterior light clusters, had the same prob on mine til i replaced them a few weeks ago now its as dry as a bone they cost me about £28 from toyota. The way the lights are designed is that water runs down from the boot to the top of the lights then around and down the light seals and is let out at the bottom of the lights. you prob have a perished light seal.

Reactivating an old thread here - but I seem to have finally solved the leaking from within tailgate problem. I had tried all suggestions in thread but the bloody thing still leaked, so I took off the bottom outer window trim again and had another look. There is another way for water to get in!. There are three plastic "clips" that butt up to bottom of glass and each of these is located through the tailgate with yet another hole! I prised out the middle one and you can see where it was leaking. Quite difficult to remove as tab on it locates under the glass and you have to release clip from below with screwdriver. Cut off tab, bung on some mastic and stuff back in hole and refit trim etc. NO MORE LEAK!! I can now stop growing mushrooms in the carpet.

I have removed my lower hatch window black trim strip, and two of the four black plastic clips (the ones with two prongs on) have perished. So that explains where the leak was coming from into the plastic tray underneath.
Does anyone know what the order code is for the 4 black pastic clips (they have two prongs on that hold the trim in place, and a bolt which sticks out the bottom).
I know the following codes are the wrong ones (cos I ordered them by mistake!)
90339-06012 - This is the black rubber bung thingy at the each end (2 of these)
90179-05095 - This is just the nuts (that go on the black plastic prongy thing bolt) -(4 of these).
Westover Toyota in Salisbury couldn't help me, so if you don't know the order code, do you know a good Toyota branch who could help me find the right bits?

They are part of the lower trim, Best bet is to find someone breaking one and get another trim and use one off of that.
Ok will do thanks for clearing that one up for me.
I know Toyota charge £75 for that trim - ouch, will try the breakers section, unless anyone has the black "prong" trim clips for sale?
