Hi everyone, im here to make you all feel intelligent again by asking another daft question. I read on here somewhere that the cam cover screws undo themselves so i thought i would have a look. They were all basically undone!!! So thats where its coming from but the spark plugs are submerged in oil! Surely this isnt right but the engine runs lovely. Will it make much difference if they r not submerged and is there a way to stop these screws undoing, like some spring washers? Any suggestions?

Put hex head bolts and spring washers on mine and the bloody things still come loose, big tube of locktight next methinks :banghead:

spring washers usually do the trick fine and replacement with allen bolts is a good idea too .. and yes the plug holes being filled with oil is a bad thing,, it will rot the leads for starters and cause cross/missfiring dur to a resistance build up .. and it stinks when hot !

Darket69 and supratoy sorted out the same problem on my na and it now runs sweet as a nut take the cam covers off and get the oil out of there asap you will notice the difference.
i just used soem grease type stuff that is suppost to be sued to seal up 0-rings..
i think any type of grease would help with the seal...
my cam cover screws are exactly the same im gona wait and change the plugs and leads at the same time so gota get sum cash together :)
Just read this thread with interest, noticed i had quite a bit of oil around the plug holes :crybaby: so i,ve been and checked the tightness of the cam cover screws, bloody hell how on earth do they get that loose!!!!!. every single one was less than finger tight, tightened them up  hope that eases a bit of oil loss now lol

happened to me last week. after 400 miles since a new hedagasket they had worked totally loose had dribbled oil over the whole engine including the exhaust manbifold causing bonnet smoke and a total loss in pressure. i was so happy when the screws were tightened and everything returned to normal. i thought big £££££s again. i'm checking them reguarly now.

My friendly local mechanic looked at it and said, " well, we could put a new sump gasket on it?" Just goes to show how usefull and helpful this site is.

Especially as there is no sump gasket, just RTV Silicone. (Although I think some aftermarket sets do come with a cork one)

I'd never even checked mine until Craig mentioned it, mine were all loosse so I tightened them up and here we are 2 days and 50 miles later and they are loose again
