View Full Version : No heat!
Been having trouble trying to find out why the heater doesn,t work, have traced the problem to this

the top pipe is hot but the bottom pipe is cold, i have found that if i manually hold the lever open i can get the heater to work perfectly, so i,m under the impression something is not right, is this a known problem?is there a fix for this so i can get the heater to work properly
Faulty vsv, very common fault, you can bypass it, or alternatively I can supply you one for £25 plus P&P

But get it sorted soon....that small fault is the one that leads to the BHG as it causes a potential airlock at the back of the syste, around cylinder 6

Remove the rod and fix the valve so its always open, with the valve closed, the is no flow through the matrix hence NO HEAT.
easy to do and yes very common.
Or take GT up on the £25 ( good price )

A lot of people seem to bypass this or wire it open whether it's working or not. The idea is that with it closed (i.e. when the heater is off), the back of the head is possibly not getting enough cooling and hence increasing the chances of a blown head gasket. It doesn't actually affect the heater at all (as far as I can tell as I've wired mine open) because there are flaps which control the airflow as well.
One guy on the Smartgroup forum (the infamous Sid) swears by this method retrospectively (he's now got an MKIV) as he said all his BHGs (he had lots!) occured in the Spring i.e. when he stopped using the heater.

Thanx for the replies guys, don,t like the sound of BHG failure tho :crybaby: i think i,ll try and bypass it for now, any tips on how to keep the lever pionting upwards so the valve is open?cable tie or something like that or wedge it open some way? how have any of you done yours?

Take the rod out of its little white plastic thingy then it will stay up :)

i tried that yesterday when i was messing with it, and the lever stayed in the downwards position which was stopping the water flow, i noticed it took quite a bit of pressure/force to keep the lever upwards so the water flowed through the bottom pipe
Has anybody done away with this valve and just fitted some kind of elbow to join the top and bottom pipes together?

Yep, the valve doesn't stay open, you have to fix it in place, yes, people have done away with the valve an used a bit of copper pipe but much easier to fix it open with a cable tie or such

Cable tie sounds sensible. I just used a bit of garden wire.

Could you not remove it and then put a peice of pipe to compleatly bypass it??????
