Hi there guys, I think my O2 sensor is broke. I first thought something was up because my tail pipes are as black as the ace of spades, the CPS(cam position Sensor) is all the way over to the right (advanced???) I put a strobe on it at idle and the mark is all over the place. The engine feels a bit rough at low revs and doesn't seem to want to rev out. It looks to me like someone has screwed with the timing to try and compensate for a fu*ked O2 sensor. I took it out and did a test on it and it seemed to be dead but flicked on intermitantly. Does this look like an O2 sensor failier?? Where can I get one?? Preferably not from those mugging bastards known as Toyota.
P.S the strange thing is I still seem to get 25-26mpg

the first thing you want to do is get the timing set correctly .. 10 degrees at idle with connectors E1 and TE1 shorted on the diag connector .. if the readings are unstable try a different plug (1 or 6) .. if the reading remains unstable check the air gaps in the cps ( read tsrm ingnition section) and the leads themselves .. just have to say the ignition timing will not be effected by the lambda sensor if the lambda fails the ecu will just switch to a slightly righer fuel map to compensate.
Also what are you using to test the sensor? a multimeter will not be sensitive enough to pick up any reading from the o2 sensor ..so unless you have a proper lambda sensor tester your peeing in the wind
you can get a replacement here for around £35 but you will need a fitting flange aswell >SENSOR (http://www.buypartsby.co.uk/lambda_sensors.php)

Rough idling can also be caused by :-
1: Vacum leaks
2: Incorrect valve adjustment
3: faulty coil /pack
4: Plugs
5: ****e fuel
6: poor compression
these are just obvious ones and it all gets technical from here

I have some spares lying around if you want one. PM me if you do!!!

I used a proper lambda sensor tester, the timing is set roughly at 10 BTDC but I found jumping the diag sockets made f all difference. £45 for a sensor and the plate is alot cheaper then I was thinkin.
when you used the jumper in the diagnostic socket was the engine fault light flashing ?

I didn't look to see, I was using a bit of wire and I was convinced it wasn't working. If I unplug my O2 sensor the engine doesn't run any differently and no check engine light comes on either. I know it works because I unpluged a temp sensor and it came on.
