View Full Version : warning lights
the brake warning light came on tonight on the way home from work :banghead: at first i thought it was just the switch for the hand brake but when i release the hand brake the light goes a bit duller but doesnt go off the brake fluid level is ok could this be something to do with the abs? as that light has been on for a while now or is it a low pad warning light? the brakes feel ok and there is no grinding noises coming from the pads
fingers crossed this isnt gona be expensive i havnt got much experience with brakes apart from changing pads
cheers everyone
could just be faulty hand brake switch thats where I would start, being that it goes dimmer when you release it,if there was a fault anywhere else it would not effect the brightness by releasing the h/brake

99% sure its a faulty lamp failure module, but first off check the rear lights are working ok, get a mate to stand at the back while you press the foot brake, if all the lights are ok, I'd virtually guarantee its the failure module, it is situated off side rear, take out the trim as if you were changing a bulb, centrel to that about 3" down you will see a small light blue box, take it out and look at the contacts, I'd lay money on them being corroded, if they are, thats the culprit, not sure how much from toyota but you can get one from the scappry for a couple of quid.
also if it is that, your cruise control doesn't work now :)
well the lamp failiure light did come on the other day then just last night the red brake warning light :crybaby: ill go and have a look now at the failiure module ill also check the hand brake switch
cheers dudes
it gets worse the little well at the right hand side off the boot was full of water there was a little in the spare wheel well aswell could this be related to the water getting in as the lamp failure module looks ok to me not much corosion on the terminals also i think the water has got in through the aerial as it is a little loose is the nut for the aerial on the top or inside the rear wing?

the not much corosion is enough mate, just a lttle is a gaurantee it has got inside the module, as for the aerial, the nut is on top.
sounds like you have some sealing up to do
cheersmate indeed i have got some sealing up to do ive just found a tear in the boot seal aswell super glue for that i think gona check the rear wiper seal aswell cause thats probably donald ducked too
do i need a special tool to unscrew the aerial as its a round nut with four little nicks out of it? cheers for the help

If the aerial nut hasn't got flat sides to it, just use a pair of molegrips or alike
one way to check is to remove the plug to the mudule and see if the light goes out, if it does then thats ya culprit.
good luck

If the light went out then you need a new module, the tail lights wont work as there is no power to them, the module is in line of the power to lights in order to warn you of a failed lamp.
bung a new one in and it'l all be ok again,
if your gonna go the scrappy option, make sure you check them carefully, the module does come apart, any sign of corrosion leave it, mine came off a 91 car and looked brand new, as to whether it was new or not, I dont know, a later one will prob be the best option,
might also be worth tring Toyota, you might be surprised.

Had a thought about what you said about your cruise control not working since the leak. It may think that the brake has been hit and cancelling it before it can take over!!!!
Just a thought

anybody got a spare knackered light sensor goin? on a breaker maybe havent found any in the local scrappys yet :crybaby:
ok the blown lamp warning light has gone out now but the brake warning light is still on ive had a look at the brakes front and rear and kept an eye on the fluid level just to be sure and they are ok  so does the failure module light up the warning lamp intermitently if its cream crackered?

yes it does, touch your foot on the brake, does the light come on and then stay on?
the red brake light is permanently on and the other warning light comes on sometimes when i start the car and not others i havent noticed anything when i touch the brakes yet tho

I had this problem a little while ago, sometimes red light would stay on sometimes just flash on.
It turned out to be a blown brake lamp bulb! Sometimes the fillament would work other times it would not. There are 2 bulbs oer light cluster.
Since changing all my tail lights to LED I have found out how to disable the warning module without removing it thus, your tail lights wont go out!
You need to remove two wires from its connector, if ya interested I can look see what 2 they are.

Try james cherry who is advertising a turbo for breaking on here, i have had some bits from himand they were all sound, he may well have that module left.
if he has and you cant pick it up or get it sent in time i think he is coming to billing for one of the days or i could bring it for you if that will help.
i had the same problem when i first got my MKIII, it turned out to be a combination of a blown bulb and slight corrosion on the bulb holders. it does not take much to cause a problem. :)
