View Full Version : Overheat problem, please help!

Can you bear with me so I can put the whole story across:

I was taking the first long trip with the supe and it started to overheat, so I let it cool a little and put in 4 liters of water, I then continued a little and had to stop again to put another 4 liters of water in. I managed to get back home and took out the thermostat and tried again, but does still seem to overheat although it takes a little longer, it then started to misfire, but this went away once I got it cooled down, again with more water. It seems to fill up the
expansion tank and then overflow that onto the road, so by the time I stop I have little water left! Can someone help me diagnose the problem?

Oh and the stock ( for now ) quote, not anymore cos you may aswell bung a MHG in and start unleashing the power in the 7M :)

Or you could just sell it to me

Thats what I was dreading!

You know we were talking about a meetup, do you think we could still do this and do me the huge favour of you casting your experienced eye on my problem? (before I think about trying to get together the cash to get this done)

not hugely experienced on the supe but know a fair bit and certainly enough to spot a BHG but almost certainly without looking I'd say it was.

It is possible to get these symptoms with a leaking water hose although if you have allowed the car to overheat on a number of occasions then a BHG is likely.
Check for signs of water in the oil - if there are then you have a BHG as any water should have evaporated by now. Carefully inspect the water hoses, especially those around the rear of the engine and near the turbo, for signs of splitting and dried coolant and replace any suspect hoses. If there are no signs of water in the oil I would suggest that you "burp" the cooling system if you haven't already done so. Don't run the engine any more if you can see water in the oil.
If you can do a leak down test on each cylinder it would be a sure-fire way to tell either way.

Loft's right, if you've overheated it couple of times then theres a good chance that the HG is now blown.

To test for BHGs...start it from cold and after about 30 seconds or a minute squeeze the top radiator pipe to see if its pressurised. If after this time its as solid as a rock then its almost certainly a BHG

If it doesn't overpressurise replace your radiator cap and cross your fingers!! good luck and welcome

Worth checking the rad has no blockages aswell, a virtually completly blocked rad cost me my head gasket recently. We originally thought bhg was due to bad or no maintenance. (loose headbolts were found). after many hours of work, new hg and thorough road testing, the radiator decided to let go big time at 70ish on the M4. i had all the usual symptoms, such as a gurgle behind the dash, water spurting out of the overflow bottle and at the end hoses blowing off and very passable impressions of the Red Arrows with an impressive plume of steam which the flying scotsman would have been proud of. The full sorry saga will undoubtably be boring everyone comatose at JAE. the story will probably be interesting after liberall doses of BEER.

Has anyone heard of/used Holts wonder weld, a chap I spoke with has used this stuff and says he has 100% success with it and he races cars?

A good temp fix for a leaky rad, but that's it.
If you haven't got a leaky hose, then I'm afraid your have to start saving the pennies for a BHG repair :crybaby:

Do you have water coming out of the expansion tank??

I have done a pressure test, which seems pretty conclusive, I tested number 1, 4, 5 and 6 as you know 2 and 3 are a pain to get to. I had a reading of 170 for 1, 5 and 6 and number 4 was 270 which was nearly off the scale! We then ran the engine up with spark 4 out and the fizzing in the water had gone, so looks pretty conclusive!

I'm wondering why this reading is so high. It's like you have a super-high compression ration on cylinder 4. BHGs usually give a low pressure reading because the pressure escapes from the cylinder. I'm guessing that some water was pulled into the cylinder on the down stroke and, as water doesn't compress, gave you the high reading on the upstroke? 170 on the other cylinders sounds good though.

Trying to compress water is not good. I have documentary evidence of a Ford Cologne v6 rod, that is ben and twisted through nearly 90 degrees as a result of that little test. :D
