Looking for things I can rip out of my Soop to make it lighter.

I'm pretty sure that when I met up with G.T last Friday he said that the box under the passenger's seat is an audio amplifier for the stereo but it has a hundred million wires plugged into it?

What's all that about then? If I took the wiring harness out alone it'd save about 10lbs!

Very occasionally...and only very occasionally the boffins at the factory fit a back-up ECU under a seat...not saying it is one, but it could be one. An aquaintance of mine has a mk3 import single turbo and it has an ECU under the passenger seat. Check it carefully before removing it...better still leave it alone.

its an amp.. they fit them under the seat.

easy way to check.. if you unplug all the wires and the car doesnt work.. you know its not an amp :D if however kylie doesnt appear as energetic as she usually does.. its an amp.

it is indeed an amp. i yanked mine out last week to open it up and see if i could fix it. (i have that common problem with it getting quieter with age. its just 'listenable' now at full volume. Also when the car is started cold, its silent, until it warms up after 5 minutes and gets progressively louder. wierd!)

anyhow i couldnt fix it, so if you have a working factory stereo which is quite loud, then your amp works. and if you feel like putting a new one in, you'll have no shortage of people that will buy the amp off you! (including me!)

It's this thing. I took it out and the car still runs (well I haven't driven it around yet) and the stereo still works (but I wouldn't imagine my installer wiring up my Clarion to the OEM amp., he's a bit of a purist.

Once told me that everything OEM is crap 'cos the attitude in the car industry is "Make it just good enough so that an acceptably low number of people complain about it" :)

So, anyone wanna guy it off me?

aye thats the fella. as i said, if it works theres people that'll have it off you. problem is, how can you test if it works (and is loud) without the stock radio unit in? :)

I trust ya! :cheeky: Offer me a decent price (only looking for money to keep the Surpa Renewal Project going) and I'll bring it to Billing with me. If you try it and you don't like we'll drive a Landcruiser over it. :)

We tested this amp. at Billing and it only powered the back speakers (thanks Sean) so I binned it.

Why do people want a stock 15 year old factory amp?? Get a Genesis compact 4 and shove it under your seat and listen to how silky smooth it sounds :)
