Stock pistons are meant to be good I think until about 450-500hp. More realistically and taking into account, that your engine is probably going to have a not inconsiderable number of miles under its belt, I'd err on the side of caution and perhaps build an engine with that kind of power in mind when you spec it out. Certainly, forged pistons are a must for what they cost, you might also consider a set of rods, at the very least get a stock set shot-peened and perhaps cryo-treated.
You also won't be able to torture a stock headgasket with much more than standard boost, before that gives up the ghost, a metal headgasket is then in order, or get the block wire-ringed.
I wouldn't trust a 10-15 year old engine of certainly partly unknown history be abused to the tune of lots of power, withough expecting something to let go.

i know the m3 don't have a turbo, but they have a high bhp as standard and i would love dearly to leave him behind as he just payed 7k for the motor.

so to put 400- 500hp through get the engine rebuilt?

Engine is bomb proof, but you can quite easily get 500BHP from a 1995 M3...

"With 500bhp and 475 lb-ft of torque, it was like being hit with a sledgehammer, slamming my internal organs against my spine....." Even a moderately tuned AA Stage 1 kit made me wonder if those factory binders were big enough: Stage 3 made me certain that there weren't. (European Car, May 1997"

have a look at that :cheeky:

Yup the M3 is really unleased when you fit a TURBOKIT!!! easy as pissing while drunk. Requires head spacer, new bolts, bigger air mass meter, new injectors, all controlled with OBDII tuning software and off course Turbo and IC.

thats 180+mph :flush:

What year is it???
Depends, they push 240 standard, and if there has been no work done, id reckon you'd take him no problem :)

The M3 is also a heavy bugger, and he dont have the help of the turbo

As for the links, when you post a link on here, and it gets shortened, the link dosnt work again! a problem for the admin to sort out me thinks

heres a working link

Basically its about Turbo'ing the m3, and if you follow it through you will see their is no ways in the world you could compete if he had a turbo bolted up!

My neighbour had an M3 with a tuned/balanced engine. . . didn't change the timing belt at the recommended intervals, and ended up with the valves through the top of the pistons. Didn't do a lot for his bank balance or his blood pressure.

Prior to that, it did scoot along quite well. Gave him bragging rights at the golf course, apparently.

no they dont.

220 for the 'e30' lhd one. 286 for the original 'e36' and 321 for the evolution variant.

fast, nice cars. the supe would do an e30 on a straight but thats about it. a little moddest tuning would bring the e36 into close competition on a straight. the evo would take some beating and all are fast round bends. its possible. i'd like to see you do it, too...

it's the e36 he's got guess i'll have to wait till i get mine then find a nice straight quite piece of road and see who goes best.

thought so. the e30's are £9k+ and the evos are a bout the same. it'd be a little quicker mate. start with what i've done to mine. upped boost, k&n drop in air thing, upped boost and a decent straight through exhaust. he'll keep up but'll have a hell of a job passing. mine eats my mates integra type-r. that has cost him sh*t loads and as a result he can be easily mocked. :)
