For a while now my power steering has been very odd, becoming almost non-existant even whilst driving. I have heard that there is a filter that often becomes blocked. Has anyone ever done a 1J one? or does anyone know who to do it?
I do have small leak that I will be getting to the bottom of too when I do some other bits.
the 1JZ power steering is a nightmare. The filter lives in the bottom of the reservoir, and isnt accessible to clean, other than taking off the reservoir and flushing it with white spirit, and then poking around inside it with soft stick or a thin brush to dislodge all the stuck on bits.
BUT, be 100% sure it needs doing, as the system can take WEEKS to bleed proplerly, and in that time it will churn up loads of other gunk, which again will clog your filter.
A blocked filter will generally cause frothing and spit it out of the top of the tank cap. A good way to check it is to take the top off the reservoir when running, and check for a swirly whirlpool type of effect :)
If it is blocked, my advice is wait until you do the leak, and then sort the whole lot in one go.
PS wheres the leak? if itsone of the tulip clamps they cant be fixed easily and a lot of garage places wont touch it as a repair cause of the likelhiood of another leak causing an accident or something. Toyota want £300 for a metal replacement pipe. I managed to find a local hydraulic bloke to fit new bits and a for about £60.
PS the power steering is speed sensitive, so yes, it goes off whilst youre driving :) Have you got a mechanical speed conversion on there?

Sure it's no the usual PPS? It's supposed to give max assistance at low speeds (sub 20mph I think) and switch off at speeds above that? I notice that there's a definate cutoff point on mine, at about 25 the steering gets heavier, but only marginally
Is there any funny noises coming from the PS pump? If the filters clogged and no supplying enough fluid to the pump (or if there's not enough fluid supplied to it), then it makes a buzzing noise that can damage the vanes on the pump
