View Full Version : G.T's Aerotop
Thought it was high time I got a build thread together, since its been so long since I got started on this car, and in turn been so long until I've found some time to do anything vaguely constructive!
I'm working hard with my available time to get this car into shape.
So far, I've removed all air conditioning, intercooler and associated pipework.
Fuel tank fitted with Walbro pump, and shortly to go back into car.
Engine in, then a change of track, so removed head last weekend to fit Cometic MHG, good job since existing gasket showing signs of beginning to blow around No4 cylinder.
Loom reworked with connections for 550cc injectors.
Thats were we are at the moment, prepping head and block for MHG, surprised to find all in good condition, no pitting, just a little discolouration, so all that needs is a little hand prepping, and good I think.
Also need to fit a bolt to the EGR ports on rear of head, since I've binned all the EGR stuff too.
Still to fit:
HKS VPC with 550cc chip
Greddy Profec B
SAFC 2
SITC (possibly)
Hybrid CT26
Blitz Nur Spec - R
Good selection of gauges
Goodridge brake hoses and new pads/disks+brake cylinder overhaul.
Replace fuel lines, since usual crusty breakage problems
Fit Spearco Intercooler and suitably chunky alloy rad
Will get some pictures, once things are in a less embarrassingly mucky state :(

this wouldnt be a job sheet by any chance, would it Gawaine ? :horse:
Well, thanks to a nice day, I've managed to refit the fuel tank (painted it first with some black Smoothrite) sorted the pipework out too.
Did a bit more finishing to the block surface.
Had a break for a bit of lunch and found some stuff on Ebay, namely a nice set of Samco rad hoses ordered, inlet tract to replace the AFM, top-end gasket set, and a new tap and die set, to sort the EGR ports.
This afternoon, I attacked the broken bolt that is the remaining vestage of security for the stock intercooler and its brackets.
Removed the remaining odds and ends surrounding the bottom end and painted the block, only did it in black, but will help keep things clean.

And 11 weeks to get it finished for JAE :)
I knew somebody would think of that, I've still got a lot to do, and worse quite a bit to buy as well.
Going to get the head sorted next weekend, hopefully get that back in place as well, then start putting all the bits back that are in the boot :D
With any luck radiators will arrive this week, so I can work out any fitment issues for that.
I suspect it'll be coming apart again at some point, since I'm not happy with the subframe condition on the back, its solid enough, but having seen John's handywork, its a likely outcome that I'll be stripping that off.
Decided to whip all the valves out and do the stem seals, who has the shim kit? I seem to remember Roger had it last? Thats a job for next weekend.
Still have wiring to do for VPC and its mates.
If it doesn't get to JAE, trust me it won't be for want of trying
i have shim kit, was gona give it to kev at friday meet though!!
maybe have a word in his shell like if your ready for it now?
I've checked the valve and seat condition and they look OK, head will take a while to do, anyway, expecting most of weekend taken up with that, I can mark the ones that require reshimming, which will save time.
What state is the kit in? Is there anything useful in there now?

its just a box of shims!
nothing overtly usefull, like a little guy to do it for you!

HA HA! I meant was there much of a selection of sizes, or is it what nobody needs?

I hope the ones i need are in there!:sad2:
the few times i used it i think therer was a shortage of shims just over the 3mm size, i think? or was it 4mm? anyway the ones we wanted more often where slim on the groud, we found them eventually but may be worth having a grinder about.
at some point i could make the ones i want by poping to my mates workshop and making use of his milling machine, prob a little more acurate than mark3 and his hand held grinder lol :)
Right, done some more today, head is all lapped off, cleaned combustion chambers up, ready to do the stem seals next weekend, plus do all clearances and shims, might even get the head back on :D
Things are looking up at last :D

Well, I'm now wondering whether this is all going to be worthwhile.
Gave the car a good wash to clean all the accumulated crap off, and...
I find its covered with tiny dents all over the bonnet, and rear of the roof, i.e the non-aerotop part.
Bonnet can be replaced, but the roof. Its going to look totally **** even when polished up. ****ing horse chestnut trees, all should be cut down and burnt!
Must be over a dozen little dings in that panel alone.
Really feeling disheartened over the whole thing now :(
ah not as bad as i first thought, a small panel that can be filled and sprayed surely?
?
Maybe, but since there isn't any filler in the rest of the car, don't really want to go that route.
They are the sort of dings, that when you look across the panel lowdown, thery stick out like a sore thumb

i see your point, at least it wont be like an accident repair though!

Just the sort of thing Dent Devils or similar should be able to sort quite easily.

I'd hope so, looks like hailstone damage, but isn't, definitely a dirty old conker tree.
I tell thee, once my car's out from under it, its going to fall foul of my chainsaw, preservation order or not!!

Get a wall paper roller the little ones for doing edging etc with a hard roller under GENTLY roll it over the dents from the inside!(remove headlining first) this should remove the dents, its a trick the dent devil guys told me about a few years back.

Top tip that, thanks mate

The guy who took 2 trolley dents out of my door warmed the panel with a blowlamp to get rid of the last traces of the dents after he had pushed most of them out. He got it quite hot but not enough to damage the paint.
roller marks and scorched paint! its gona look real good at jae dont ya think? :poke: :horse:

I have noticed that when removing and replacing the roof your automatic instinct is to lean your elbow on the rear section of the roof - I think this causes half the dents on the wobblers!
More progress today, front end disassembled and Spearco fitted. Everything else put back together, with some work to get oil cooler refitted.
Radiator test fitted, had to chop a little off the bottom rubbers, to make it sit a little lower, as I didn't want to take a chance on it hitting the bonnet, however it wouldn't have, just me being paranoid.
Front end looks a lot meatier with that lot in there :D

ifs a fine art not to lean on the the car whilst fitting or removing the roof.. it comes after about two years :)
Bought a fan controller this morning, on eof those flashy digital ones.
Need to find somewhere that stocks Mintex Extreme pads next, preferably online.
Mental note to make visit to Partco Tuesday, to get some plugs and various bottles of fluids.
Also, need to work out size of reducer hose needed between HKS 3000 pipe and HKS SSQV hardpipe.
GOing to start tidying up interior and getting some wiring done later, fit gauges and put dash back together.
Need to fit Goodridge hoses too.

I had the mintex extreme pads for a while but didn't really think they were any less resistant to fade than the standard pads. Alot of people from over the pond are using axxis or hawk pads with good reviews

Think I'll probably chuck some standard ones on for now, since I will be fitting some Brembo discs and other stuff later this year.
Got clutch sorted and bled yesterday, done a major engine bay cleanup too, probably not to Mick's exacting standards, but a huge improvement over what it was previoulsy, removed everything removable a bit at time, and have cleaned and waxed all the engine bay paintwork. Plus it all went back in the correct place, repaired some rather brittle bits of wiring loom casing, just neatly taped it all up.
Now run out of things to do, since I'm awaiting delivery of my fan controller, brake pads and other assorted bits. Waiting on arrival of copper spray, so can't put head back on yet either :(
Phew,
There's obviously been some development since I last updated this.
Car is now running, with VPC working, just leaving fuelling to be adjusted, to prevent the vast plumes of unburnt fuel smoke that poison the road behind it :D
It made its first appearance in just over 5 years at JAE, hopefully someone will have some photos to donate, since I didn't get any.
Now the major surgery is complete, it leaves stuff like brakes and shocks to attend to.
awsome :D sounds good heeh always nice to have a running car :P although whats the problem with gassing the people behind :P your not there hahaha
