View Full Version : 1G-GTE power delivery - breathless at high rpm?

Hi there
I've just bought a Supra 1G-GTE, and it has no history. I also have not owned a turbo car before, so some of this is new ground to me.
I'm in the process of changing the engine oil and the gearbox oil (notchy second gear), and trying to find somewhere to change the timing belt.

But I was wondering if anyone would kindly could tell me why when I accelerate, there is a surge of torque at about 4000rpm, then after about 5000 the feeling of acceleration seems to slow right down. Is this the nature of the car or is this a problem (not enough air? Still on standard intake)
My other car is a tuned Honda you see, so maybe I'm just used to engines which you redline to get the power out. I've been trying to adapt my driving style, and I'm really enjoying the size and comfort of the Supra!

Cheers

Mr Pink

Edit: The ECU is apparently still running on the auto map, but the gearbox has been converted to manual. Could this be it?

I've got one of those, as have a few people on here. it was my first turbo car too. since then ive learned the hard way its more important to have clean fresh oil in a turbo than an n\a. my turbos are now dead so i cant really remember where the power used to tail off, but they are high revving engines - sounds like yours is quitting a bit early.
interesting point about the ecu, could be that i suppose
more informed people will be along shortly......

Nice to meet you Mark.

I understand what you're saying about the oil...it's top of my list too.

Am trying to get the oil changed this w/end whilst my honda's in for some bodywork.

Cheers

I think the ECU could be an issue, if you post the Part number for it, may be somebody with a manual box could post their Part No.??

I think the 1G makes its peak power around the low 6000 RPM mark, and having a toyota standard exhaust doesnt help matters at that RPM neither.

Honda's on the other hand make their peak torque AND HP at high RPMs and generally much lighter than your average supra.

Morning all

The exhaust is a large bore one, but I don't know where it starts from (cat back or turbos or whatever). That is as far as I know the only modification.

I will establish which ECU part number I have this w/end, assuming I can find it!

The oil change is booked in for Sat too now, so that's one thing off the list.

The other thing I noticed last night after a mere 10+ min journey was that when I got out the car you could smell the heat (if you know what I mean) coming from the bonnet area...popped the bonnet and the heat seemed to be radiating from the area around the turbo situated nearest the front of the engine bay...in my defence I took it very easily that journey, no thrashing and warmed up before and warmed down after...noticed it again this morning after about 4 miles. Not knowing much about turbos, are they meant to get that hot?

Thanks to darket69 for his email....fantastic!

BTW is there a contribution/membership fee to the running of this site? I feel guilty taking free advice when I'm not in a position to contribute any advice back.

Cheers

Bonjour

Had the oil changed today at my local garage, the owner had a cursory look at the engine and he found that there was a leak of oil from or around the frontmost turbo, which was spilling onto the heatshield. Hence the smell. Secondarily the piping from that turbo was loose, which he then tightened. This has made the car feel nicer up higher revs to me.
He also found a leak of oil from somewhere behind the cam gear cover (didn't take it off to look in more detail), and another from the power steering piping, which is perishing.
Next then, I will change the timing belt, for safety's sake as I have no history.
After that I'll sort out the leaks then will swap the ECU etc.
Until the timing belt's done, I'm taking the car off the road! Thanks for all your suggestions and help so far.

You're very lucky that the mechanic found all those oil leaks! This is the common problem among all Toyota turbo engines, the extra oil pipework means there is far more chance of losing oil than any other type of engine.

My old 3.0 litre lost oil via the rocker cover gaskets and the turbo oil pipe flange no thanks to loose bolts.

Thanks Anh. I've just had the timing belt renewed now, and am going to tackle the leaks. The power steering one I think I can manage and the turbo one I've seeked some advice on elsewhere on the forum.

That leaves the fuel mapping. Could anyone tell me where abouts the ECU is on the supra please?

Then I can find the part number and see if it is different to the ECU which usually comes in a manual car.
If it turns out to be the same , I may just get an APexi AFC tuned in to tidy up the power delivery, cos that made the world of difference on my Civic.

I think its behind the glove box (ECU)

Bonjour Mr Munch.

Thanks for that, I'll have a look over the weekend if I get a chance between work.
