View Full Version : A/C: I don't believe it!

Been having some problems lately with the air-con on my NA - like it would work for about 15 minutes after the car was started and then fade away. Thought I would have to get it re-gassed, but decided to try the solder fix on the A/C controls PCB before shelling out around £100.

Having dismantled it, I inspected the solder joints and couldn't see anything wrong but decided that as I'd made the effort to get it out, I might as well apply a soldering iron to the joints. Put everything back together and voila, nearly froze my fingers off on the journey to work.

Excellent tip whoever first posted it.

Resolder the solder joints of the big socket on the AC controls.

those bulbs are a pain... you cant get them anywhere.

You have to buy a similar one, and solder it onto the posts which the old one sit on.. and point it into the hole.

Sorry to be picky, but I am going to claim as being the first recorded case of finding and fixing the dry-joints on the back of the heater control unless anyone else case find an earlier (http://www.smartgroups.com/message/viewdiscussion.cfm?gid=108882&messageid=44770) example. :happy3:

I also managed to find some light bulbs that are a direct fit replacement for the heater control at the time. I can check again if anyone is still interested. I might even have 1 or 2 left.

Does your blower fan work? If the fan is working but still no AC then you may need to get your AC system re-gassed (there are other threads on the BBS about this). The system will not operate if the gas pressure is too low. Otherwise an electrical fault or compressor fault is likely. A dry joint is a hairline crack in the solder where the leg of a component pokes through the PCB. You may need to look very closely to see it. It's easy to get the controls out.

Resistor pack under the glovebox on a UK car. There are other threads about this on here too.

Cheers bud, now i know how robert scott felt when he got to the south pole to find that he'd been beaten! :crybaby:

Granted, you got there first lofty, i didn't even own a supra in 2002.

Similarly, i've also got a few of those little bulbs hanging around - you can get 'em, just not in halfrauds.

He He. Sorry to steal your thunder but I can remember how pleased I was at the time when I worked it out. If you notice from the times, I posted the problem at around 7PM, went away and spent about 2 hours pissing about taking my dash apart, found and fixed the problem at about the 3rd dis-assembly, and then posted my success at about 9.30PM. Simple things please simple minds, as they say. Those tiny green condoms are great, arn't they?

Maplins do the bulbs too: part number WQ13P .. priced at about 70p (I don't have any bulbs out so not tried them myself)

Well found Ian. I didn't include your thread because it didn't have details of how to locate the resistors, etc, plus I mentioned that we already had threads on our BBS and I expected people to have searched for those. Yours is certainly an easier method of repair, although my solution was far simpler -

I went to Toyota and bought a new one! :duck:

Mine was 78p for a 2 Ohm 10W resistor, from the local electronics component shop. :) RS components do them and Maplin.

BUT, it's a fiddly job and you need to be able to solder. :)
