Hi .. welcome to the board.

The Blown head gasket seems to be a common problem .. but mostly with turbo'd cars .. it seems to be a mixture of incorrectly torqued heads, exessive heat build up due to the EGR system at the back of the head and improper coolant system servicing and bleeding.. removal of the ERG by means of blanking plates seems to help prevent/delay head gasket faliure as does torquing the head down 20% more than the spec torque.

Also choice of head gasket is important .. if your going to replace with the stock composite gasket then try and use the oem toyota one as 3 party replacements can be a bit "iffy" in the quality department .. you can also go for a metal head gasket but these are by no means a garanteed route to it not blowing again .. the MHG requires a perfect surface on both the block and the head to maintain a proper seal and even then the slightest warp will see if fail very quickly. There has also been talk of a copper headgasket (see the for sale section) this would incorporate the strength of the MHG and the sealing properties of a composite gasket.

Imho the best route is to stay clear of the mhg as its overated and over expensive for a piece of tin covered in neoprene and to go for a composite gasket or source a copper one .. nodalmighty has details.

Hope this helps !

thank you also if i get the whole engine for $450 do you think i sould still go for the gasket problem or just slap a new motor in and play with the old one.
