Alright all, need a little advice...
Woke up this morning wanting a spin in the car, so got in and turned the key. Engine turned over a few times but didnt fire (unusual) so i carried on turning, then there was a loud bang, and vapour from under the bonnet.
On further investigation (popping the bonnet) i saw that the intake had blown the airbox piping clean off the butterfly, and was smoking nicely.
not a man to be put off, i connected it all back up, and the car turned and started fine. NOW what the hells wrong with it!?!?!? hehe
costs me a bloody fortune this car, but i love it.
any ideas guys
Cheers.

Sounds to me like a back fire, I'm not sure what would cause it though. Maybe your injectors are weeping and the plenum filled with vapour causing the car to "flood" and when you tried to crank it a lick of flame came back through the inlet valve and ignited the vapour and POP. But don't quote me on that :)

It has happend before, but nothing this bad. just a little pop. it does sound like a backfire but for it to blow off the intake piping it takes quite a strong bang. think i sould have it checked out??
The ignition leads are a bit shot, but the plugs are new bosch split pin.
Also, ive got an '86 ma70 GE special, and i was told that only the turbos have LSD's fitted, yet mine has one. anything to do with it being a "special" or do the non turbos come with LSD's too???
Cheers

I would have it checked out if it does it quite often, I think some N/A's had LSD's as it was an option (I think).

Faulty cold start injector, dumping in to much fuel???
I don't know what other problems you have had but cam timing could also cause a backfire.

********, i'll have it checked out. though i have a feeling it might be a spark jumping from the leads to the injector rarther than the plug. it dosent happen often but it is a worry. spent 3 grand on the car already, and thats without mods. anyone else spend this much, or am i a muppet???

Sounds like the ignition timing is a bit advanced.. causes a backfire through the inlet, when starting from cold. (bikes typically have this, a 'spit' back through the inlets sometimes) ....which is pretty bad as can cause damage, and likely doesn't run well until 3k+ rpm ..?
LSD's were an option on some N/A's i believe.. who knows with JDM models lol

funny that, it does have a torque pickup around 3000 rpm, i'll try the timing.

while i'm on about problems ( i have a lot of them) why does my heater matrix make a slushing sound when i turn the heat on? i've heard tell that this can mean a blown head gasket, but i've had it compression tested and its fine. also flushed the system, and changed the radiator (it was more than a little clogged) and i still have the same trouble. any ideas because its VERY annoying..
cheers all!!!

o.k, tried to bleed the system off the top heater hose, but still no joy, have tried this about 5 times now, even got a garage to service it, but they didnt manage to sort it out either...does the heater matrix have to be drained seperatly??? bloody garage told me they didnt know the car... fat lot of good they were....

I'ne had the sloshing noise, and my HG is OK, if you run the engine with the heater on, it should bleed itself,(mine does) you should then top up the rad when possible. Supras seem to scare garages or make them think of very big numbers. What are you using in the cooling system? I use the red toyota for life stuff, a bit pricey but it seems to do the trick.

I'm using some cheap bright yellow stuff, but its the right specification. i'll try what you said, the rad does seem to lose a little water but i do top it up again, i'll see if its lost more and let you know. i've had major trouble with the whole cooling system, and i'm now saving up for a full silicone hose kit, as its running original hoses, but a new engine. the old engine was on 156k so there due a change...it could well be a hairline crack in one of them, but there soooo expensive...hehehe
cheers mate

i had that sloshing once, so i did the heater VSV (i think its called that) mod where you physically detach a lever under the bonnet to make the coolant flow better. 'burped' the cooling system once and its been fine ever since.
no blown headgasket yet but ive only been pootling around roads. im sure it'll go once i start hammering it. ;)
