Hi everyone,

I happened to fall into Supra ownership a few years back when someone offered me a 3.0 NA model on ebay as a swap for a car I was selling at the time.

I fell in love with it (sadly the wife didn't) but unfortunately it suffered a BHG and the big end went on it.

We're thinking of selling both our cars, getting a good car between us and for me to get a "Run Around" for work. Hmmmm, an opportunity for another Supra I thought.

I've read through the buyers guide and now have more of an open mind on what to look out for however, do any of you guys have any extra points of argument I could use to win my wife round? :-)

Points I've thought of so far are:

1) I'll sell the motorbike and not bother with another as the Supra will be my new toy

2) It falls into classic insurance so isn't that much more expensive than my current car

3) It falls into the old tax bracket so is cheaper than my current car to tax

4) I've got a better understanding of the car now and know what to look for now (This could backfire if I make a mistake in my purchase lol)

Any other little pointers from you guys would be much appreciated. I really hope I can join the MK3 crew again soon, I miss that car soooo much.

Cheers and hello,

Col

I don't see the need to have to "talk the wife round" and my reasons are as follows!

1, If your getting rid of a motor bike and replacing it with the supra you will still only have one toy!

2, Theres a lot more space for shopping in a supra then there is on a bike!

3, The two of you wont get wet going to the shops in your new toy!!

4, (the most important) If she the sort of wife you have to "talk round" to be able to get something that is going to make you happy then she will also be the sort of wife you will want to be sticking clear of by spending time in the garage with said new toy!!

And yes, i am married and take no responsibility for any slaps, bad looks, poison in food and cuts to head by flying plates that may be suffered from following this excellent advice, lol :)

Oh and hello and welcome to the forum....

Cheers for the comments guys :)

My wife is usually pretty good with things like this but I've had a very long string of bad motors in the past.

Think when the times comes I'll just have to bite the bullet and pull up to the door in a shiny supra and take the repurcussions.

You may well be hearing a lot from me in the future if I do end up with another Supra as conversation in my household may be few and far between lol

Cheers for the warm welcome, hopefully I'll be part of the MK3 Supra fraternity once again sometime in the not too distant future :cheeky:

Buy a members car if possible with history and known credentials. Steer well clear of Ebay.

Welcome aboard.

just arrive home with one, you will get deaf and dumb breakfasts for a week or two, then she will come round,
although she will throw it in your face at any avaliable opportunity.
but at the end of the day its your call, she`s your wife and only you know the limits that you can push her to.
ps
my marriage is well and truly fubar, so you would be very unwise to follow this advice, :)

All i have to Say is Read my Sig! but yep if you know her limits go for it! My EX wife told me that she wouldn't get in my Supra when i got it! So I pointed out its a LONG walk to town Etc she changed her Mind but I still divorced Her:action-sm:happy3:

Go For it! buy one, enjoy it, kill it, fix it, and make it quicker!:cheeky:

Can you not just have her murdered? Is she insured? - could come in handy with the car project :)

May be some legal loose ends to tie up with the murder option, otherwise - dungeons are also back in fashion I understand...

Somehow I don't think I'm gonna get away with murder or keeping her locked in a dungeon feeding her fish heads for the rest of my days.

And as for buying another supra for herself, let's just say I prefer my nuts where they are lol

Broached the subject the other night when we were talking cars and got a barrage of "Remember the last one", "They're so old", "Heaps of s**t", "Look at the money you've spent on that bl***y bike already" etc etc by which point I drifted off and fell asleep

However, this was my first response when I said I was buying the motorbike so there is hope yet!!

Thanks for all the comments, even if some of them could potentially get me knicked, although richer :cheeky:

I'll keep you posted,

Col

Old, yes, its why its a classic - there aren't many left.

I disagree with the 'heap of sh1t' comment though....clearly your wife needs to be sent to one of the club re-education camps :D

Say i send the wife to the re-education camp and by way of miracle she agrees to this purchase for my own interest as well as hers how much are you guys spending on average say on a monthly basis for maintenance, upkeep etc?

I know this is going to vary greatly but a guidleine cost if poss would be great?

Cheers again,

If I added mine up at the moment i would Cry or be sacked! LOL A full sevice is about £75 for parts, Budget for oil and filter every 3k to be safe,
Get Oil filter from toyota for £7.65 plus vat and use 10-40 oil,

The main bill is Fuel! But as mine is being rebuilt that doesn't come into it.

Honest reply as to running costs, over the last month an average of £60 per week on petrol (though I have racked up nearly 700 miles in the last 2 weeks) I usually put £20 in pottering around town and embarrassing the odd chav.

As to what have I spent on bits? my lips are sealed, because the Mrs is a member on here too!

Please don't even get me started on the amount of money I have shelled out over this thing. I am almost GLAD to see this one go.... After two motors and a bunch of failed attempts to get it up and running ( too many drunken hours disassembling the motors and losing bolts ) I have finally given up and sent her off to ebay.de All I can say is listen to some of these guys on here. The remaining few might get you a divorce faster then their supras can hit full boost..... But they know what they are talking about. Helped me out may times. Oh and I am getting another Supra as soon as this..... well all I can call it, is a "thing"... is sold.

:) It's true!

They're not a cheap car to run long term but then again, if you wanted cheap you'd buy a Corsa or something. It's high performance, high maintenance and high running costs but such is the way of Supras. Buying one is a very small part of the amount it costs to own one!

The cost of ownership doesn't look that bad until you start modding. I don't plan to daily drive mine so it doesn't seem that bad, although it is a DD for this week because it's cold and the golf's heating is being rubbish.

I think if you get an N/A and keep up on maintenance it probably wouldn't bad.

Plus teach her to get her hands dirty and it'll help you out ;-)

lets hope the missus dosent find this thread eh? :)

its easier if its yer weekend / toy etc , cos you can do repairs and source bits cheaper.
also, you'll use less fuel.

sounds like yours is gonna be pretty much daily use tho...
