View Full Version : Should I?

I may have the opportunity to buy a cheap 2JZ-GE as a mate is swapping it out for a TT in his mkiv. The question is, will it be worth swapping for my 1G?
I only use the Supra for drifting (95% anyway) and the 1G lacks torque lower down which can be a pain in the :horse:. On paper the figures are pretty similar but the 1G figures are for full boost (so 4K and above).
Before you all say if I'm going to swap it out then I may as well do it properly and go 2JZ-GTE or 1JZ or 1UZ. I'd love to but I don't have the money for those engines or an R154. The 2JZ NA will bolt on to my W58 so that's one less hassle.
Will the 2J give me a more even power band (or torque band) than the 1G and therefore be better for drifting, or shoud I spend the money on getting my adj cam gears and FCon set up on a rolling road and then leave it as is.
mods to the 1G are:
straight thro S/S exhaust
shimmed to ~1bar
Air filter
HKS BOV
FCon (all set to zero)
Adj cam gears (on zero)
newish plugs/leads,lamda.
Last rolling road it peaked at 235bhp.

Yip, and throw a Vortech at it and keep the 1g diff ratio :)

As i have a 2jzge in the lexus i am on the fence with this one. It's not that quick TBH. I know it's fitted in a lexus big luxury car but still it is quite slow to me.
Even the book list the 0.60 at over 9 seconds.
Maybe it's just down tot he drive train being 5 speed auto not sure but it's not a very quick motor IMO.
The famous Sid went from a UK7MGTE to a 2JZGE mkiv, and said the 2JZ was a much better unit. Just as quick as his BPU 7MGTE , and much smoother and nicer in general.
Personally, i'd say.. possibly... if you dont mind the work.

Cool thanks for the replies guys. Still trying to decide what to do but your comments have helped.
Steve - you obviously didn't read the bit about me having no money! But yeah, a Vortech would be cool.
Adi - doing the swap wouldn't be too much of a problem. That's interesting it was faster than his BPU 7M-T, I didn't think they were that quick. More even power would be much more useful.
Watch this space, there may be a build thread on it's way :):):)

Sorry I forgot to say, I don't think the 1G would perform too well in a big saloon through an autobox either. But that is quite a slow 0-60 time.
hmmm, the pondering continues...

Plenty of 2nd handers on ebay for M3's etc

That 7M must have been dying on its feet for an N/A mk4 to be faster. 222hp and 200lbs/ft of torque v 260hp and 280lbs/ft (these are conservative numbers) I agree the 2J is far more refined but quicker?????
Theres no way any of sids engines would be on their last legs :D bit of a spanner head was sid.
The thing is, he's had both, so had a good comparison.. where were only speculating.
he didnt say it was quicker.. just as quick.. but better all round. Smoother, better power delivery. He said it was a much better drive than the 7m in every way. Theres a world of difference between those 7M and JZ units.
For example, a BPU 7M will no way be comparible to a stock j-spec mkiv tt, despite having similar power figures. The 2JZ TT will kill it easily.
You've also gotta remember the mk3 is heavier than a mkiv.

Maybe driving on the redline it would be as quick, changing gear at 3-4k rpm every shift I can't imagine there would be much comparison

But all I want is a good engine for drifting, so if the power delivery is better in a 2JZ-GE then that's what I want to go for. My 1G is pretty laggy. I've never driven a manual 7M-T but can't imagine it being much worse than mine, even though the twins are supposed to reduce lag (it's prob more noticable now i've shimmed the wastegates).
So if I was to put this 2J in, is it the same length as the 1G (or what I mean is will the gearbox stilll be in the same place or will I need to move it/change propshaft/diff etc)?

I believe the 2jz-GE's still use a w58? Should be fine, engine is no longer than a 1jz (same bore, shorter stroke)

Yeah 2J-GE has W58. So all I need is 2J bell housing and everything else will be ok yeah? Or will the clutch mounting be different?

No sure what stage of tuning my supra is but it is a bit more than BPU at around 310bhp but it would piss all over the lexus on acceleration. It is night and day between them. I agree about the smoothness though the 2jzge is very nice to drive.
