View Full Version : 1/2 width emergency wheel as a spare?

I was thinking about buying one of those skinny, light weight, emergency wheels as a spare. Less weight, more room in the boot.

Has anyone done this? Is it a stupid idea? Anybody know of one which one might fit?

The MKIV uses one iirc so that'd be fine.
(called space savers)

called space savers

Yeah, them's the beasties.

You've got a MKIV jessie car in your workshop at the moment haven't you?

Has it got one?

What do they weigh? I mean, not to the last gram, just trying to get a feel for whether they're significantly lighter than a sawblade with a 225/50ZR16 on it. :) It just occured to me that they might be "space savers" rather than "weight savers" 'cos they make them out of solid titanium or some sh!t to overcome the fact they're skinny and make them "safe". :banghead:

I'll have a look later, but I believe the boot has been stripped for a speaker build.

The space saver wheels are just made out of steel, not particulary heavy, infact, alot lighter than the standard alloy.
The tyre pressure of them is about 70psi, and they cannot be driven on faster than 50mph.

Don't trouble yourself Nick.

Then it's on the cards! :) Space saver, sheet of 6mm ply, new carpet for the boot!

No probs! It's only got to get you to Slow-Fit, or the nearest Toyo stockist, worst case. Right?

Yep it's an emergency wheel, I think I'd just carry some easi-inflate or not bother at all though, and just made sure my breakdown company know (if they're not informed they can refuse to pick you up, as the car isn't in a servicable condition)

And there we have Tuesdays boring fact :D

I think I'd just carry some easi-inflate

I had a bad experience with that stuff and it put me off.

Got a puncture, straight throught the thread, very repairable but I'd dropped my spare off at a Slow-Fit to get replaced the day before (they had a queue, I was on lunchbreak) so I buy a can of tyre-flate-gooe, do the deed, and when I go to pick up the spare I ask him to repair the puncture. He gets the tyre off, then goes "Woah! Can't repair it mate, it's got that sh!t in it." Yeah, so? "It attacks the rubber. Your tyre's gonna have to be replaced. Sorry mate." I get on my cell 'phone and call another three tyre dealers, same story, if it's had tyre stuff in it they won't touch it! So I pump £118 into his till and he orders a tyre and I've got to go back three days later to get it fitted! Meanwhile my tyre is being kept up by the automotive equivalent of bubble gum!

Don't get me wrong I don't mind spending money but £120 every time you get a nail through the tread is off putting. I'd end up being tempted to try and get to the nearest tyre dealer, navigating between petrol stations to keep the tyre up and end up ********ing a rim in the process! :flush:

I'm not sure if that's the case anymore, as most Beemers have a can of that stuff as standard and no spare.
Although I'm not a tyre guy.

so where can you get these smaller wheels could you just use another toyota wheel out a scrappy for example to reduce the size or does it have to be a special job, if so what wheel would fit on there cos that would make this boot install SOOOOOOOOOO much easier. :) :notworthy

Bear in mind you're looking to reduce the width of the wheel, not the diameter but, I'd imagine a MKIV spare one would work, unless you have ENORMOUS calipers! Oh yeah, that's me ********-ed! :banghead:

lol bless ya no other toyota gonna have silly 225's i recon a yaris or something gonna be lucky to have 155's or at a push 175's would also be safer than one of the space safer wheels i seen my push bike got wider tyres

does any one know of another toyota car or any car that has a wheel that would fit our beloved soop?

Nick@TC

A Yaris wheel?? LMFAO

I believe the RX-7 FD3 uses the same thing and has the same PCD as our wheels.

Normal spacesavers are fine Dean, as they're just for emergencies.
The spacesaver wheel has the same rolling radius as a stock wheel, but is obviously just a alot thinner.

ok i just spoke with toyota and the mk4 space saver wheel is £50 plus vat oh and also plus tyre which i've been told is the expensive part. also they do two different spacesaver wheel for the mk4 would they both fit or is one like likely not to fit as if opened they can't send them back. :banghead:

I imagine, 1 would be for the J-Spec 16" wheel and the other for the UK 17", you'll want the 16" one, if you still have 16"s.

Toyota *should* be able to tell you.

Would you like me to post on the MKIV board and ask for a secondhand one??

I doubt if you'll find another Toyota with a five stud 114.3 PCD either! :)

What, if anything, would be likely to have a 114.3mm PCD, 5 stud pattern and an 18" space saver?

I'm pretty sure I won't get a 17" over my calipers and I'm f!cken' poisitive I won't get a 16" over them! :crybaby:

Done, I'll let you know if any response.

Ian, how do your brakes compare to the UK MKIV Supras brakes??
Might be worth trying a UK 17" wheel on your motor, if it fits, then bingo.

There's a guy with one, said make him, an offer......

Fricken' huge! You'll see them when I come down. HiSpec had to remove the valve stems on my 18" alloys & put shorter ones in so that they would clear the calipers! :D

Push comes to shove I can use a 17" for the spare and if I blow a front tyre I can swap the back wheel to the front and put the spare on the back. It's just a p!ss about, that's all.

Noone knows of a car with a 5 stud 114.3mm PCD and an 18" space saver wheel then? :crybaby:

i though the 17 was just the inner diameter though, and as long as the outside 'rolling radius' was the same it shouldnt matter?
(ie ive got mk4 16's on already, surely they have the same rolling radius as a mk4 17 but with less tyrewall?)
ive probably got that way wrong though, tyre measurements still easily confuse me ;)

Your theory is correct it works on the width oif the tyre to th size of the rim

ok peeps have just slidthe 17in space saver in the hole provided and

the tyre sits in the space just below the top of the well BUT it has a rasied lip round the inside of the wheel so it pokes up just above the floor of the boot it's still loads better though. will show ya all next time i'm around shouldn't interfer with a boot install though think i got it sussed will post more when i do sort it
