I have heard about cam rattle. This is when the cams have worn very slightly and it is not until the metal expands and fits into the bearings that it goes quiet. Ask Ed(darket69) he is the one I heard

its nothing to worry about .. what targa was trying to explain was cam end float .. this is when the cam wears a tiny amount and slides very slightly from back to front causing it to "knock" on the bearing jornals .. there is nowt you can do about it and it will do no harm at all (can also be caused by a slightly over tight cambelt).. also suspect a worn water pump bearing, idler bearing or alternator.

the oil level is fine. when its cold the oil pressure seems high, ie. 70-80 at about 2000rpm but when its warm its 70-80 at 3000rpm. when i start it the oil pressure goes straight to 60 but when warms its idles at 40

Sounds right for a N/A motor :D (N/A's oil pressure is mucho higher than a turbo due to the lack of a turbo oil/return feed system and oil jets)
For the record, both my N/A's have done this.. They hate being left to stand overnight for some reason, esp after a longish run.. In fact my first motor developed this rattle at cold startup, but would not do it when starting from warm.. slowly it got worse, getting to the point when every time you started it, it would rattle.. in the end i changed the motor as i thought it was going to die totally :( (it had only done 75k, and was doing it since 64k.. no way big ends would have survived 10k+ miles if they were that shot!) my current motor does it sometimes, but not always.
It 'sounds' like the big ends are shot, but as you said, after running for a short time (few seconds) it stops totally and runs sweet as a nut and silent, even when thrashed. Oil pressure is fine as well, and climbs immediately on start. Flippin strange, and the guess is that it's just wear in various places that tighten up when warm and the oil gets circulating..
