Ok guys, another dip**** question for you.
I have an oil leak from the front of the engine. It seems to drip off the stay bar which runs across underneath the pulleys at the front of the engine. has anyone had this before or have any ideas what it could be.
I just thought someone may know what it could be before I start pulling the motor apart and then find out I cant get it back together for Santa Pod in 3 weeks time.
Anyone please???

Possibly front crank shaft seal. also when I did my head I found oil from the cam shaft seals had dribbled down there too...
Could be crankshaft front oil seal, get under it when it's running and you will see. HTH. Peter

I had oil in the same place on mine and it was pissing out from the cam covers, tightened the screws up and its fine now but they do come undone apparantly.
There is a weep hole behind the crank pulley, on the top front lip of the oil sump. Try getting a load of clean rags and clean the area around it, you'll probably find alot of oil and muck there. Anyway, once it's clean you can always feel the hole and check for oil from that hole. Best check after having driven the car some reasonable distance. If there is oil on your fingers after checking, then it's the front oil seal.
You might be able to replace seal without dropping sump. Take off crank pulley and dig out old seal lubricate and tap in new seal with a suitable sized socket or drift. Make sure you put it in the right way round and make sure its absolutely sqare to the engine or you will rip it. I can't swear that you can do this on the Supra but have done it on various cars and saved a lot of time.

So if there is oil on my fingers after this what is the fix for the problem? Is it new oil seal? and how difficult is this to rectify?
Yep Sounds Like Your Crank Seal. Mines Stuffed To. Easy Job Just Take Your Time. I'm Fixn Mine In A Little Unusual Way By Replaceing The Engine Mines Seen Better Days.

It is quite a big leak BTW, When I park her up she leaves a puddle about the size of my thumb within about 5-10 mins. Does that still sound like the crank seal?

Have you tried cleaning the upper lip and the weep hole on the sump, and then testing for any further oil after a short drive? It's just a way of eliminating the possibility that the leak is from the cam seals instead.

I have finally found the time to check this out..... yep it is leaking from the weep hole that is described above.
Any ideas where I can get a crank seal from? Is it Mr Toyota or would local motor factors stock that sort of thing???
Thanks

Just ordered one from Mr Toyota £17.67 + v.a.t. and it will be here wednesday :)
Guess what I will be doing this weekend.:D
Quick question tho...... how do I hold the crankshaft pulley to undo it without damaging it?????

I think you'll find that there are two oil seals, one for the crankshaft and one for the timing gear - best replace both while you've got it apart.

Car in 4th, foot on brakes, breaker bar and lots of effort :D
Or
starter out, jam ring gear, breaker bar and lots of effort :D
Or
Breaker bar on wedged on floor, flick ignition on till bolt comes loose (warning, cam damage timing belt)

Out of interest Nick how would this be done on an auto? would it still be ok to jam the ring gear?
cheers
Get a friend to hold a bar still while you crank the engine. :)

Jamming the ring gear is the norm, apart from using the SST when the engine is in situ.
When the engine is out, some impact wrenches will undo it

Try taking the old one to you local drives and bearings dealer and they can probably match it so long as they can see the numbering on it, as car makers don't as a general rule make these parts, and use comercially available ones just like fanbelts and bearings. HTH

are there any other seals in that area that could be leaking????
