View Full Version : some kind of Grinding or .....?
I have been meaning to post this for ages, I am not a techie when it comes to cars, all i know is key goes in ignition, turn and drive.
However I have noticed I sometimes get a grinding noise or as though cogs are grinding - a sqeeking -(metal rubbing). it is mainly i believe in 1st gear. I go to floor it, and then i get a grinding - i am not sure if its the gears, or the turbo. I dont get any oil leaks - no white smoke. Have you guys got any idea... oh and its not all the time.
thanks

Check you belts are tight enough, as a loose fan belt will squeal. also water pump bearing will do the same. does it leak any water?.Its also not a good idea to "floor" a cold engine or one you suspect has a mechanical problem. Sorry about that, but i'd hate you to wreck your engine. :duck:

i know the noise!!!!! mine does it! its like getting a metal bar and scraping it across th floor. it's inconsistent but does it when the car is rved slightly when stationary and when gently pulling awy at the low end of the rev range
Sure it's not the ABS system charging? (sounds a bit like a lightsabre switching on :) ) should only do it once, first time you go over 5mph ish after starting...

Just off the top of my head:
Could be knackered centre bearing on the propshaft. Although this should (but not always) give a whiny or rumbly noise all of the time.
Could be a knackered gearbox mounting or propshaft centre bearing mounting.
Could be knackered engine mountings, causing the engine to move slightly (because of the torque effect when accelerating in low gears) and vibrate against the body, or when the engine moves, the exhaust moves and vibrates against the body.
Have you hit any speed humps recently? That can put stuff like the propshaft and exhaust out of alignment. Time to get under the car and see if anything is loose, scraped or bent. :)

mine does this but only in when its in gear, never when stationary and idling.
eg coasting over a sped bump in 2nd, the revs drop to around 1000. when i accellerate again its makes that metallic noise for a second then goes away.
because mine only does it in gear, im convinced its my gearbox :(
In or out of gear mine makes this... graunching sound from the front brakes. Don't know how else to describe it. Least i think that's where it comes from. The wheels are hard to turn and at low speeds you can hear it over the engine, but at higher speeds either the motor drowns it out or it just goes away a bit with the speed being greater than the friction inertial force or whatever the hell. Get under it as the man said, but lift 1 side up and see how free your wheels are while you're down there.

thats your lock stops the nylon cap has worn away you could grease them as a stop gap
i'd thought they'd ceased up a bit, cos this car sat for long periods with its last owner, but that is worth considering. Ill get around to doing something about it one day.

I was wondering what the hell that was hehe. I guessed it must be some sort of electrical pump as the lights dim slightly when it does it.

im lucky if mine does the abs check as my sensors are faulty btw it tests when you exceed 4 mph
