Ok, turned on supe b4 i went on holiday and let it run so as not to let the battery run down. no probs. came back from holiday (2weeks) and it struggled to start. fair enough no probs with it when it was running.

went away up north for 2weeks with work. just came back and the thing whined on and on but wouldnt start. eventually got it started to leave it running and it sounded like a bag of hammers.

so i thought i'd run it gently down the road and back. selected 'd' and the revs dropped to 500 and it started spluttering and about to stall. quickly put it in 'n' and blipped the throttle. went immedietly to 1500 rpm and then dropped to respectable rpm. so i just sat in it with it ticking over. stable revs but sounding like a bag of hammers.

it then dropped back to 500 and about to stall so i blipped it again and the revs refused to budge. it then went to 1500 rpm where i intended it to stay but it started sputtering and just dropped right down to 500 rpm and stalled even with my foot down. got out of car. distinct smell of oil everywhere.

the plugs are just covered in oil. is this causing the prob or is summot much worse? i presume that the plugs have been like that for some while but it puzzles me why the car should be that different over 2 weeks. when i revved it gently there was also a noise of scraping metal!? any suggestions?

while u were away the oil has been leaking by the rocker covers and into the plug wells. This will cause a very bad spark (it will arch in the oil) and thus the running like a bag of bangers.

the rocker covers arent the easiest to line so change the rocker cover gaskets and put em back on maybe that it

right. so i'm not really mechanically clued up but i'm gonna give this a go... do i undo all the screws and take of the cam cover. then do i pull out the ht leads and absord all the oil up with tissue paper and job done? is it that easy? thanks for the help, too.
