You know the noise a fan makes on some cars when they kick in at idle? Well, that's what mine sounds like now. Over the past few days it has just started to become noticeably louder whereas before it was as quiet as a mouse. What's the likely cause?

Cheers

James.

Either the viscous coupling is on its way out or the fan's hitting something, iirc your fan shroud was broken, maybe it's moved and the fan is rubbing??

Not hitting anything - checked that first 'cos of the fan shroud. The viscous coupling eh, anyway to test it? How hard to fix etc. Cheers Nick

Easy to fix, but expensive iirc, there is a test, but my memory eludes me at the moment as been down the pub :D

Take it off and put electric ones on! :)

Heard mixed things about the electric route, anyone done it?

:umm: one way of testing is to stick ya hand in and stop it but if it is broke you is one finger less :banghead: cos it wont stop :duck:

Thanks for the tip Sean .. think I'll pass!

Anyone experienced electric fans? Might have to be the guinea pig!

The coupling should allow the fan to freewheel when you rev the motor and the motor is at normal running temp.. if it sounds like a plane taking off and the fan speed increases a lot when you rev it, the coupling is shot.. it should only do that when the temperature is getting hot and the coupling tightens up.

(I think most of them do it when starting up for a few seconds then settle down.. mine does it if you're idling in traffic for a bit, but freewheels pretty much all the rest of the time)

I think £200 for a new coupling was the last price i saw from mr toyota..:(

Flexalyte fan kit i believe is the choice.. 2500 cfm, with thermostat etc. not sure on price though

We've just fitted that kit to a MKIV Supra, the price is around here somewhere...................

Ouch............£350 :flush:

I reckon my coupling is shot, always liked that aeroplane noise :) £200 for a new coupling is ridiculous, no chance of buying that. I've heard lots of good things about the kit you mention but there are always people slating them too, guess you have to try it and see.

Nick, that's not cheap!! Where was that from? I presume the install's dead easy, any difference in temps afterwards?

Cheers

James

It's not running yet as we're doing our own single conversion on it, it's just one of many parts that's being fitted.

It's not cheap, no. Easy install and comes complete with thermostat do dah, and air con thingy me jig.

To tell the truth when it comes to electric cooling fans there are Manufacturers in the UK i would look at.

PACET do a 16" electric fan which puts out 2450CFM's which is the same as the American twin kit. they also do a Twin kit if you want to go that way you could run 2 11" fans which put out 2500CFM's. Twin kits come with all the bits i.e thermostats ect

The twin 11" kit is £140, which is probably what il go for

Kenlowe also make fans and a lot of the V8 dragers and custom builders used them, but i couldnt be annoyed looking as u can all use a search engine :)

Sean my research comes from this link
http://www.pacet.co.uk/clubkit.htm

if u look at the table the 11" gives out 1180CFM, so the twin kit = 2360CFM, pacet dosnt quote Free air figures, and those CFM's are rated using a a typical 1.5” (39mm) thick radiator

My pricing came from this site
http://www.rpiv8.com/engine-9e.htm

who sell the twin 12" kit for £165, so my pricing is a guess-ta-mate for the 2 1" shorter fans and a bit of shopping around.

Anyone else wanna jump in? Lofty?? lol :duck:

Kenlowe

Single 16 inch Single = 1100 c.f.m
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/Sean.40/spec16-1large.gif
Twin 10 inch single = 210 c.f.m therefor twins would be ?? 420 c.f.m
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/Sean.40/spec10-2large.gif

Therefor if i replace the viscous fan with a 16in kenlowe and left the twin small ones that all ready there BIG improvment YES ?? or even looking at Pacet spec's the 16in = 1608 c.f.m

No mate lol

Them are the Kenlowes you use for minis and stuff, you want your CFM's around the 2300 mark

I think kenlowe do a Pro type 16" fan, i also notice miami-rice sell Pacet twin kits with their uprated Supra Rads. Dp also sell the Pacets, but they are the Pro versions which are around £50 a fan dearer.

So im sticking my planning with the PACET TWIN CLUBMAN 11" SETUP which is goin to give 2360CFM's in the real world or 2800CFM's in the world of free air that dosnt exist lol

I think the Americam Flexalite CFM figures are also free air figures

EDIT:Think its easier doing away with the 2 OE small ones and just going to a clean 2 Fan install

Would be nice if the technical Boffs would butt in as usual sean, feels strange this plan going ahead without critism dosnt it  :cheeky:

I run a pair of 12" Pacet Pro's on mine so your plan, urgo is a very good one and totally beyond critism :notworthy

The only criticism I'd have is watch out for your battery.
I fitted a kenlowe when I first got my car, but because of it's BHG the fan kept coming on to cool the engine down. Fan on for long time = low battery.

Then you need to decide if you want to wire the fan up directly from the battery, so it runs when the ignition is off (which is how most other cars are set up), but drains the battery. Or have it tied into the ignition so that the fan only works when the engine is running and charging the battery.

The way I did it was a kenlowe fan I had spare and I got a thermo-switch from the local motor factors. On the N/A Supra the thermostat housing has a couple of spare plug holes (the plugs have hex heads). I took the plug to the motor factors and got a thermo-switch of the same thread.

Don't forget the fan needs to be switched through a relay and the supply needs to be fused, but it's a really simple fit.

Mark.

Twin kits come with a Stat and relay, but i imagine the relay for the twin fans that are already there should be effecient

Cheers for the info Nick, when it's finished I'd be interested in hearing how it goes.

Bondango - nice one mate, that's great news about the UK alternatives. Twin 11" at £140 sounds ideal, let me know if you guys are going ahead with this - could save some cash.

Delphius - fiar point about power but I've got an optima and will be uprating to a very high power alternator soon so that won't be an issue for me.
