View Full Version : abs computer
my abs computer is broken i tested it as lofty described when i first joined this bbs (thanks lofty btw) the light stays on in the car indicating a blown computer,i might have sourced a replacement from a member on here anyway is there a difference between turbo - n/a and auto / manual computers? my car is a n/a auto btw. I need to change it after a near miss the other night :flush:
cheers
Paul
It looks to me like the ABS ECU was different on 86-88 and 89+ card. Take a look at the EPC (http://www.cygnusx1.net/supra/library/EPC/MKIII/parts/89540.html) and you will see what I mean. It doesn't show a difference between NA and turbo cars.
cheers lofty if i have a look at mine i can get the relevant numbers to compare with the replacement to see if theyl work
thanks
Paul

If the one you've sourced isn't the right one, I've got one, same part number going spare. It was off a D reg N/A manual.

also to check it i turn the ignition on then unplug it dont i? then see what the light does
sorry for posting this i tried the trsm but it was being so slow id be a skeleton before i fix my brakes
on the old comp underneath the part number there is these numbers:-
079400-0254
on the new one:-
079400-0253
is this just a serial number or something?
just a thought do i need to reset anything to clear old fault codes?

Sorry to hear the computer didn't make a difference.
What fault code are you getting when you disconnect the ABS link?
According to the diagnostic info in the link below, to erase the ABS codes, all you do is disconnect the ABS check connector, then depress the brake pedal 8 or more times within 3 seconds.
Here are some links that may help:
The brake system index is here:
http://www.cygnusx1.net/supra/library/TSRM/br/BR_01.html
I'd advise running through the troubleshooting guide which is here:
http://www.cygnusx1.net/supra/library/TSRM/br/BR_02.html
And details of the ABS diagnostics are here:
http://www.cygnusx1.net/supra/library/TSRM/br/BR_51.html
Are you sure it's not an ABS sensor down, or something wrong with the actuator?
How did you get to the point of making the decision it was the computer at fault?
Sorry for all the questions, but I'd like to try and help...

just down the A1 from you at Leeming Bar. :)
don't wait too long only got one left, due to lack of room.
right i tried again for fault codes i must have had a :blonde: moment last time i checked as i disconected the wrong wire on my car the plug is black and at the front of the abs actuator it read i think 3 codes:-
code 23 - open or short circuit in 3 position solenoid of rear wheel
code 32 - left front wheel speed sensor signal malfunction
code 34 - open circiut in front speed sensor
so now i think i have a spare abs computer as the one i removed may not have been faulty oh well so tomorrow im going to try cleaning them all up and check for loose conections is this advisable? will it be all 3 speed sensors? if so how much are new ones approx? are they toyota only parts? its goin to be expensive isnt it :crybaby:
cheers
Paul
can the speed sensors be cleaned up using brake cleaner? this fault is doin my head in now sometimes it works most of the time it doesnt id love to know why the bloke i bought the car of didnt investigate further

The tsrm mentions cleaning the faces of the ABS sensors of rust. Because they work on a magnetic principle, any rusty cr*p build up near them would cause them to malfunction. I'd just give them a wipe.
The same goes for the notched bit of the wheel hub that the sensor "senses". Any crap filling the notches would cause the sensor to not sense the notches.
The other thing is as for any intermittent electrical problem: check the wires aren't chafed, unplug the connectors, give them a squirt of WD40 and connect/disconnect them a few times to get rid of any corrosion on the contacts.
Finally, check your earthing points. Near the ABS computer and any used by the ABS sensors. You may have rust under the earths and that's a surefire way of generating dodgy electrics!
