View Full Version : South to North Road trip!!?

Just testing the water to see whos interested in a long road trip next year?
I was just thinking how much better it is to actually drive supras in convoy for a change rather than just park up in a park all weekend.
So maybe a trip from south somewhere right up to Scotland stopping 1 or 2 nights on the way, picking up members along the route?
Will take a lot of logistical planning but could be fun I reckon
Another option could be the ring maybe but may be best for someone whos actually been there to sort that one but I'd be up for that too
yer count me in for a trip to the Nuremberg, although im thinking driving there and back in a soop could be very expensive lol

I AM going to the ring next year. Haven't sorted a date yet, I still need to check when's best to go as it's not always open to the public. If there are lots of people interested then it would be awesome to get a mkiii convoy going. It will NOT be a cheap trip tho. But I look at it as a once (maybe twice) in a lifetime thing so hang the expense. I was thinking about taking a few days off work and going mid May (not bank hold weekends as it will be chaos there).
I therefore won't be signing up to a south/north run. Sorry Ben. Come to the ring instead mate :yes:

Why not do both? Can sort them for different times of the year ;)
just not the end of may/june, thats tt time, might not make it back with both legs this time..
well this is a new idea and not been posted amoung the new committee, the only reason that i say that is that i think it's a great idea.
i'd even be willing to drive down to say brighton or hasting's to start the trip also i think have it so we don't touch a motor way for as much as we can. after all as much fun as our cars are in a straight line there alot more fun round corners lol

Sorry didn't know I was supposed to run everything throu us first :duck: :)
It's just an idea and yes no motorways is a great idea
Could work out a route via several postcodes to stick in the twatnav.
Pass through a few interesting places and terrorize some villages
lol just wanted people to know exactly where to lay the fame and credit for a great idea mate. as apposed to some of the other stuff we have been talking about.
i think it'a sounding better and better, it'd be a lil french trip ish but driving on the right side of the roads to place's we can pronouce. lol
i think lets think about this big time and maybe make a week of it??????????

I'd be well up for a week of it BUT it'll be tricky to sort and I doubt a lot of people will take the time off to do it (they're not as obsessed as us :))
Hows about just us and whoever else wants to do a week long summer uk road trip and visit loads of members up the country along the way? Now thats a plan :D
Another france trip did cross my mind and would be great BUT again I very much doubt many could commit to it due to the sh1te state of the country - peoples finances and jobs :(
The UK tour could cater for all
agree uk tour sounds great just need to convince kate she can drive the supra pmsl

uk tour of the country sounds like it'd be a great opertunity for people to meet and greet.
even if, along the way, people who can't afford to do the whole thing join in even just for a day and get to be part of the experience.
maybe put an itinery together of where the tour would be starting from and ending (possibly) on each day to give people a chance to take part in the leg of the tour nearest to them?

On the subject of the French trip, it can be resurrected very easily!
All the planning is done, it just needs checking to see if the ferries and such have changed and book the hotels. It could be back up and running in a couple of weeks

AS for French trip, maybe start a new thead about it kev and see who's interested? I would be but depends on cost for most I assume.

Thats likely to be the problem for most at the moment. I'll leave it until after Christmas and then try and guage who would be interested.
The UK road trip does sound a good idea, any chance of a guide on dates?

Far too early for that but obviously summer sometime.
how about a land's end to John o' Groats trip??
UK road trip?? i think this is a spiffing idea and il be well up for this, maybe even mrs mark3 too.. got to say don't fancy France trip, never have, dun why?? so i wont be inc my self in that BUT UK trip sounds coolies!
maybe go up one side of the country and down the other, that way it will include west country and it be a big circle like trip???? the A1 from Peterborough my be a good route to include although it getting more and more A1M though, but good road in parts and from nth Yorkshire up it quite near the coast in places...
just an idea :)

Don't knock France till you try it ;) Worried about driving on wrong side of road? :duck: Thats half the fun :)
The french trips we've done before have been the dogs danglies and I'll be well up for another
As for Lands End to John o'groats, it's an idea but bit more of a treck than I had in mind. Up one side and down the other is good idea though so we can get to most people on route.
Looks like it's not going to be a cheap week off :)
hang on lands end to john o'groats is too far but up one side down other isn't??????

I know it probably means more work for whoever is organising, but, perhaps set the route up in blocks of say 200 miles? that way as the route winds itself up and down the country, folks can do the "blocks" nearest to them or the "blocks" they want to do to see new parts of the country.

that was same sort of thing as i was thinking over 5 days can cover a fair amount of ground and have alot of fun.
My 2p worth....
and just ideas but i think it would work well and cover the moast areas
day 1, up east side of country to northern england, overnight stay.
day 2, across top and start to come south down west side a little then overnight stay.
day 3, carry on further south (maybe devon) overnight stay.
day 4, drive the south coast from devon to east sussex (opposite way to RTTS) overnight stay overnight stay, then go home from there!
Maybe??????? as i said just an idea, maybe break it up to include more overnight stays?? either way im defo up for this!!!

North doesnt really start till you get up near Finfon:)
I'm up for at least one "leg".
Kielder forest drive would be good, but I just spotted 15mph speed limit!!!

Well the M74 from Carlisle to leckerbie ONLY has marked cars on it!!!! So keep you toe down!! there is some lovely countryside and roads around that area!! my car had a nice workout there on bank holiday weekend! But the A66 has camera's and mobile vans plus patrols!
I would be up for a leg or 3 depends on timing next year! As I have plans afoot for me now!
I am planning on north being Scotland you konw.
agree we don't do anything up that part of the world i think it would be good if we could maybe start bourghmouth type thing drive up west coast of wales then up west coast to scotland then if people want down the east coast a bit.
You can't do a south to north trip with out taking in the A9 up through bonny Scotland with some of the best roads and scenery this pit hole of an island has to offer. Giving this some serious consideration but it sure won't be cheap.

im up for this and i've got a couple of good routes
yeah it's def not going to be cheap, i think £200 in fuel alone.

A few years back i used to travel the A9 every month, i agree it's a great road for a supra, and the scenery is something else, as is the west coast of Scotland, (i used to work at Kishorn)..
but if were starting from the south coast of England, i would think Glasgow or Edinburgh is as far north as we need to go..(i'm sure guys who live north of Glasgow or Edinburgh wouldn't mind meeting up with us nearby)...otherwise were going to need more then a week to do this

Perhaps Dalwhinnie or Blair atholl... since we'd be passing. :cheeky:

yeah £60 only gets me about 250 miles at a push running on fumes and I think we're probably looking easily at about 1k miles aren't we? So best up your limited mileage people ;)

so guys... I love this idea, sort of supraball 2010..
...but there doesnt seem to be any objective, its fair enough to say we'll drive to here then onto there, but to be fair thats no fun, pesonally i'd like to see driving to get somewhere, maybe to the great and much unapeciated uk tracks, snet etc
if it were to link shows or events rather than travel loges then fair play... also there is huge opertunity for those comunity minded,, 20 or so big loud sport cars all with the same charity banner would be a good thing, i can think of a couple i have contact with who'd apreciate the publicity..

No the event itself IS the driving! This is about people getting together after driving supras in convoy through some nice parts of UK. Tracks and shows happen all through the year anyway so this is something different.
No reason someone can't organise a UK track tour though

I would be up for a leg. I won't be able to afford to do the whole thing as my Nurburg trip will be very expensive too.
I think the route should be determined by linking up all the awesome roads in the UK - not necessarily just driving up one coast and down the other. I definitely want to drive Buttertubs Pass (as I missed out on last year's trip up north). If people list roads they know to be awesome driving roads (some have been mentioned - obviously incude spectacular coastal sections), then they can be plotted on a map and a basis for a route created.
just my 2p :)

The list:
Road.......................................From... ...................................To............. .................General Area:
Buttertubs Pass........................Thwaite............... ...................Hawes.........................Y orkshire Dales
A169......................................Whitby.. ..................................Pickering....... ...............North Yorkshire Moors
Snake Pass (A57).....................Glossop................. ..................Sheffield......................T he Peaks
A68.......................................Edinburg h................................Darlington....... ...............E. Scotland/NE. England
A9................................................ .................................................. ......................Scotland
Kielder forest area.............................................. .................................................. ...Northumberland National Park
M74 Area.............................................. .................................................. ...............Scotland
(you have to use full stops as excess spaces are removed and tab doesn't tab across, it's tabs the window)
OK so I stole a few from googling "Good Driving Roads" but it's a start.

One thing to consider is if this is going to be in the summer all the good roads will be clogged with caravans and Austin Maestros doing 20mph. This trip is about quality driving roads so the chances are they'll be single carriageway and overtaking will be difficult with 10+ strong convoy (even in Supras :))

its a shame iv already got a nurburg trip planned..if the sup is finished in time, not sure i could do two road holidays

where have you been for last 10yrs mate there are No Maestros left they all rotted away 3 yrs after being built lol.
Yes planing it will be fun, and deceiding on roads too!
Also cheddar gordge in the SW is ace too not fast but sounds are amazing
Roads up here are usually pretty old gimmer free on weekdays, but defo avoid Buttertubs and Kielder at weekends. If doing Buttertubs (going North) then continue up past Tan Hill Inn (of double glazing fame) and on to Barnard Castle, Middleton in Teesdale, then brilliant driving road over the tops to Alston and then up onto the A69. No cars in the way, just a few bikes, and big sky all the way.:) On a Saturday or Sunday it a no no though.

Unless you do lots of 3am starts and early nights, that would be ace and could cover a lot of ground very quickly!
Up for a few legs I think.
