View Full Version : Supra Heresy!

Okay,

It's that time in a morning when I really should be getting some sleep...

But in that fuzzy area between sleep and being awake I just suddenly had a thought:

I think the Landcruiser uses a gearbox similar to the Supra, so for all those people who want economical daily-driver Supras, why not shove an ex-Landcruiser diesel in it? :cheeky:

Then I woke up: a 4 litre plus turbo diesel isn't going to be any more economical than a standard petrol Supra... :banghead: Did they do any smaller ones that'd fit?

It'd sort the head gasket problem out... :duck:

Just of the funny looks you'd get at next years Jap Show... pull up to the drag strip in a Supra going RattleRattleWhee..... :)

But then again, you could run it cheaply (and slowly) on chip fat.... Get Van Aaken to tune it up a bit.... and there are plenty of dead-engined Supras out there. Hmmm.

But seriously, if someone was mad enough to do it, or had a reason to do it (like the missus doing god knows how many miles each week on the school run) anyone know if it would be possible? Just as a purely technical exercise.

Mark.

The Hi-Lux would be the engine to swap in, but if economy is your thing, then the Supra isn't.

Oh so very true! :)

It was just a thought, like I said. It's not like I'd er, do it or anything.

But, in the future when all the people in China get cars and drink the worlds petrol resources dry overnight, there has to be an alternative way of running our Supes. Right, I'm off the collar the market in chipshop fat and Hi-Lux engines.... :cheeky:

Shirley has a '95 Colorado with a 3L Deisel & she gets 19MPG about town & 25MPG on the motorway! Admittedly she does spank it! :)

Heh, plus the huge tyres and 4x4 system soak up a load of power.

With the news that petrol looks to be going up another 5p a litre, maybe a diesel Supra isn't such a bad idea after all.

I still want the Lexus V8 in mine. Except, I reckoned on the cost being around £4-5K (imported LS400 front cut allegedly around £1500 landed), and the end result might be amused, but a bitch to insure, and you can find BMW 840is for around... £5-6K... which are two doors, pointy, RWD, 80s looking and V8 engined.

Fact is, I can't do the work myself, so the V8 Supra would be an expensive folly.

Hmm, it'd be nice to try one of the new generation diesels in a Supra, but (a) they're expensive (which defeats the saving money aspect of the project :) ) and (b) probably a lot more work to make fit, which leads to (c) it's not really a good idea to put a noisy, lumpy, old, underpowered diesel in a Supra....

Unless there's a very, very cheap (free would be good), new diesel engine that'll fit straight on a supra bellhousing available.... No, must resist, I haven't really got the money to get mine through the MOT, let alone start modding it...

torque of the devil

Anyway i'm converted to diesels. Modern ones are really quick as long as you remember to change gear instead of hanging on till the red line. hard when overtaking with oncoming cars in the near distance but...
anyway i looked in to the landcruiser engine. it hasn't got anywhere near the torque i was hoping for. 266 vs. supes 254 so the extra torque aint gonna compensate for lack of power
