It measures the amount of free oxygen in your exhaust gas, and swithces between lean and rich trying to keep your fuel mixture at 14.7-1 Stoichiometric. It is primeraly there to keep your catalitic converter at its optimum temperature.

If you buy a Apexi Turbo Timer you get a AFR monitor which just connects at the ECU into your OEM narrow band sensor wire. I think you can get them for about £70 and they also act as a volt meter too as well as err, a turbo timer.

If you want wideband then figure on spending about £300.

£250 for the TechEdge WOB2 DataLogger box with display and all cables, £50 buys the LSU4 6066(GM) or 7057(VW) wideband Bosch sensor.

You can spend a LOT more but as the TE one is very accurate and has 7 extra data logging channels (3xTC's and 3xTTL and RPM) I see no reason why you would want to.

AEM = £550 Has a fancy display but only reads down to 11.0:1 AFR which is not enough for the really silly power stuff.

Motec one is very good at £1500 as it's the very same unit inside the DynaPack ;)
