Hi there again

I have a sticking starter motor, and have just rung up Toyota for a replacement quote for the motor, and at £254.79 +VAT, I am open to other suggestions which cost less.

I don't really know the mechanics of the motor itself - does anyone know a way of unsticking it?
Alternatively, does anyone know a way of buying a cheaper one, please?

I (and my bank) would be grateful for any cost-cutting help!

Thanks for reading!

Mr Pink

..... and a good dosing of a degreasing agent if you can find a way of spraying it in there!

It`ll be the solenoid sticking , you could take it off and get it reconditioned

You could really do with finding out if the 7M starter motors fit ( Ed would be the best bloke to answer that ) at least then you could pick one up from a breaker ;) .

As dino suggested , if you can get to it , TAP it with a hammer ( don`t belt the crap out of it ) , that should work in the short term but it will eventually pack up altogether :banghead:

Search for SCONZ, it might actually be on one of the Holy Bible of Mk3 pages - I think one of my links mentions it.

Does it do anything ie: click when the key is turned?

My starter did the same last year so I took it apart...easy job its only the solenoid that seems to be a problem.

The thing comes apart to clean up, the main problem point is the contacts that send power to the motor, these burn and pit with time, I found flattening these down and improving the contacts solved the problem, use fine file then wet n dry to get best finish.

This may help ya:

Nice one, thanks very much.

Yes, it does indeed click when the key is turned. Also, I tend to swear every time the key is turned.
I've followed your link, thanks for the info. I will have a look to see if I can follow the guide, but it could well be beyond my comfort zone!

Cheers

It is easy, bit of a poo to get to it but its only held on by 2 bolts..not so bad on ramps, remember to disconnect that battery earth lead! lol or its early fireworks night!!

You should not need any new parts as in the guide as old ones clean up nicely, it dont need to be perfect, guide is helpfull tho.

You can test it just by putting the wires on afterwards but without fitting it to the engine, get a slave to turn the key for ya while you hold onto it tight!

Good luck and another local.. I'm just off the hook junction of M3 not far from ya.

My girlfriend's dad used to be a mechanic and he's coming down for a visit this weekend.
I'm hoping we can bribe him to get under the car (by throwing cans of beer under the car) to take off the motor for me so I can do the contact cleaning bit as mentioned by Stuey and in the link.
But thanks for all the advice, and offers. I'll give you a shout to let you know how it goes.

Thanks!

Before you take the starter off comletely, try splicing a flying lead into the thin wire that goes into the starter. This usually supplies a +12V which comes all the way from the ignition switch. I had no end of starter motor problems on my own car, but I tried this and every time turning the key gave a click, touching that flying lead direct to the battery +ve would fire it right up. Either the original wire was corroded or broken or the ign switch was playing silly buggers, I ended up wiring round it and putting in a starter button with new wiring etc.

I had exactly the same problem on mine. In the solenoid are two brass lugs that are connected together by a brass striker plate when the solenoid is activated, these lugs wear down over time. I did a short term fix on mine by building the lugs back up with solder, but the solder wears down quicker than the brass (obviously). However it did last me another 8 months or so until I got round to obtaining a low mileage replacement from a breakers for £25. Worst case, just replace the solenoid.

P.S. If it's clicking the wiring is ok, it's the contacts that are dirty or worn away.

Yep solder will vanish pretty pronto under that sort of load!

I do believe the contacts are avalible separately from Toyota,(although they will tell you otherwise..bastards) found a web article about it a while ago.. must look again.
