View Full Version : Rear fuel plumbing nightmare

Thought I'd face up to it this afternoon and fit my new fuel filter. Old one looks to have been there a while, and the whole car is getting a check over / service while I'm waiting for my engine gasket.

The back underside is quite rusty - the body's fine, but the subframe and tanks straps are a bit nasty. It almost looks like someone reversed it into salt water for a laugh once. Put perhaps they all look like that ??

Anyway, I'd like to get the inscrutable japanese designer of the fuel line to get himself under my car and change the bleeding fuel filter - what a bitch of a job! Got the banjo side off OK working from the front, but the other side is nicely siezed in there. And with the terrible access to that end of the filter it was difficult to get any leverage on the nuts. Managed to fiddle around and get reasonable presure on the spanner only to have it round of the corners of the nut I can work on. Not only that, but worse still, whilst trying to undo it, some presure on the rusty line coming from the tank made it start leaking fuel. Rust made it fragile, I finished it off. Check the pics.

The bust line disappears onto the top of the fuel tank and so I had to remove the fuel tank. The pipe is part of the assembly housing the pump, both lines are rusty so I need a replacement - can anyone help me out here?

I also still need to get the sodding fuel filter off the end of the fuel line to the engine, going to try and get an open ring 14mm spanner, try mole grips (not really the space for em) or even remove the fuel line + filter and sort it on the bench ! ****s.

Good luck that looks like a hell of a job!!!!

Mate, i've just been through *EXACTLY* the same thing with mine.
I decided to cut off the coupling nut completely, cut the offending pipe near the top, and replace with flexible fuel line. Oh, and Toyota can supply you with new tankstraps for 70quid :)

How'd you get the plastic shroud off??(the one which protecs the front of the tank from stones)
If it was anything like mine, it'll have come off in about 5 different peices after being smashed off with a hammer.

Hehe, were you in there to get at the fuel filter aswell?

I'll have to investigate whether there's any pipe unrusty enough to put flexible onto. Those clueless parts monkeys aren't getting my 70 quid for straps either.

I actually left that plastic guard on the tank, and the straps. I undid the brackets the straps hinge on / attach to and took the whole lot off together. Tried one plastic guard bolt and it broke off, so I didn't try the rest :). It may make it interesting getting it all back on though - I'll try and get the strap mechanism working somehow first.

Nah, mine just started leaking from that pipe. Ill do the filter at service time, but i should just need to undo a jubillee clip now :D

Fun, isn't it? :sad2:

I think I got at my fuel filter from the drivers side rear wheel arch, take all the plastic liner out and everything and see if that helps. I remember getting a 6 point socket on there, 1/4" drive, that will sort your rounding-off problem. The fuel pump carrier assembly is probably really expensive over here, if you need new tank straps as well I would give Jay Marks a call (they are at www.toyotaworld.com) and talk to Jeff Watson (ask for him by name) aboutit. Even fedexing them from the states will be about half the price of Toyota UK.

I think you are doing the right thing by replacing those seriously rusty bits, a fuel leak is never fun.

The problem side is the other side of the filter, passenger side end, the pipe goes through the nut so socket is not possible. Just had to buy a set of flare nut spanners just to get a 14mm one. None of the supra breakers on here seem to want to go near their fuel tank, so I'm going to try Stu L's method - cut the pipe off by the tank and replace with flexible fuel line.

Walbro pump'd be nice, but it's just going to have to wait unless some kind person wants to donate me one ? :)

My tank is back on, not helped by having fuel in it - the drain plug is rusted solid.

In the end, I had to bend the fuel line that goes out of the filter to the engine. Removed the hose support above the diff, then gently bent it so I could get the filter out behind the rear subrame to get something to grip the shagged flare nut. Don't think I could have done it with the tank in place. The flare nut is still seized the the fuel line, had the spin the new filter onto the flare nut. Still don't think I'll changing to again for a looong time. Ditched the plastic guard at the front of the tank - couldn't be bothered with it.

Glad you got there in the end, I remember what a nightmare it was on mine. I think my plastic guard is in a landfill site somewhere as well . . . :happy3:

were the filters really clogged? ie is it a worthwhile job ?

Can't tell how much dirt was in the filter - it's a sold metal canister and I don't have X-ray vision :). The in thank fuel pick up strainer was spotless and there was not crap in the bottom of the tank though.

Off the top of my head Toyota say replace every 60,000 miles - about as often as the cambelt.
